Upgrading in the tropics

Hello,
I live in Singapore, and the least you can say is that moisture levels are slightly high. So I hardly do PLA as it becomes brittle after a week. I just ordered the upgrade kit and saw Prusa is advising to print it in PETG. PETG is absorbing moisture like PLA so I don't think it is suited here. I print normally all on ABS (EcoMaley) which has a much lower moisture absorption rate and would like to know if there is any other reason for using PETG than the ease of print under normal conditions (stronger? less shrink? more wear resistant? ). I did notice the extruder has to be black for the filament sensor.
Thx
Eddy

Re: Upgrading in the tropics

I did my up grades in black ABS. Worked like a treat. And ABS has the advantage of being more heat tolerant than PETG. I have tried PETG a few times and much prefer ABS. It gives me a lot less problems. But like you I'm in a high humidity environment here in SW Florida.

I did something similar to these:

https://all3dp.com/weekend-project-a-diy-heated-drybox-for-3d-printing-filament-storage/

I was able to find containers (Sterilite 1932) for <$8 at target, printed some feed through and shaft holders, and my filament stays <15% humidity for months on end. I have a box for TPU's, a box for PETg, a box for Specialty stuff (Bridge, GitD, etc) and lastly one for PVA/PLA.

You can still have issues, but it turned it from "bake out before every print and worry for longer prints" to "move right box to right printer and hit go"

I maintain an informal list of San Diego, CA 3D printing enthusiasts. PM me for details. If you include a contact email and I can add you to the informal mailing list.
