Prusament Galaxy Black jamming?

I just started printing my roll of Galaxy Black and I'm having repeated trouble with both skipping and jamming. It sure seems to be filament-specific. Is anyone else having similar issues? I was able to fix the skipping by over-tightening the extruder gears, but now I seem to be running into jamming. Everything else seems totally normal - printing at 215C, .2mm height, etc.

I'm trying literally the same g code that's been giving me trouble all day, not even re-sliced, with a different PLA (AIO orange) and it's going just fine, no under-extrusion/skipping/jamming at all. It's like the Galaxy black is both soft and hyper sensitive to heat creep.

I printed with Galaxy Black and the difference to other filaments was just stunning. The quality of the print improved considerably and I did not have any problems with printing...
Did you use the Prusament config in Slic3r? I personally haven’t tried it, I use the profile by Chris Warkocki (MK3 Pretty PLA V2), this solved a lot of my jamming problems.

I did specifically, but I didn't notice any difference, digging through settings, with my normal PLA profile, which itself is Prusa PLA but with density and cost added. AFAIK, no differences on actual print parameters.

Interestingly, I did notice I had to set the bona-fide prusament to 96% flow to avoid ridging. Like there's some small size compensation somewhere for filament never being /actually/ 1.75mm. As a sanity check, I did measure the filament - 1.75 +/- 20um everywhere I checked, of course.

I have the same problem on my anycubic kossel. My cr-x prints is without a hickup. So not sure what is going on.

Glad to know I'm not crazy 🙂

Heat creep would make plenty of sense - I never experienced heat creep jams before "upgrading" to the Mk2.5, and now I can't print enclosed anymore. It'd be a hell of a thing to have a heat-creep-prone filament on top of that!

The problems mentioned in the other thread and my own struggle with Prusament Galaxy Black and hyperventilating while searching for a solution for the problem.

I was able to successfully print Benchy with the Prusament Galaxy Black PLA with my Prusa i3 MK3S with the following settings. Prior to making these changes, I had the same issues you discussed earlier in this thread.

 

Extrustion Multiplier: 0.95

Temperature, Extruder - 

First Layer: 230ºC

Other Layers: 230ºC

Fan Speed min/max: 50%

My problems with jamming and under extrusions occured right after the upgrade from MK2 to MK2.5 and are the same with MK2.5S. I have really tried a lot and nailed it down to the following:

- problems occur mostly when using PLA with "glitter" particles (Prusa mystic brown or vanilla white, Fillamentum vertigo grey or rapunzel silver), other PLA prints without problems 

- i NEVER had these problems with PET or ABS Filament 

- i think the problem comes from the NOCTUA fan. The reduced airflow (vs. the old fan used in the MK2) leads to higher temp in the cold end and the filament is melting "to soon", especially when the print has lots of retractions.

If you are printing large parts that have lots of small bits, retractions and z-lifts can cause an issue to expose itself.  One test for this is to look at the filament after a jam.  If you do a normal unload, and see filament with a tamped down end, and it happens to measure 2.2 mm diameter, you may be experiencing the heat break jam.  It happened to me a lot when printing Prusament Mystic Brown, and a few marble-esque filaments.  Replacing the heat break with a standard E3D-V6 model resolved the issue.  Prusa claims their specific heat break - a modified E3D-V6 model - is required for MMU operation.  Though a few MMU owners have also replaced the Prusa model for the plain E3D model.

I think that I bought the MK2 before the MMU was available, so believe I do not have any special heat break. I have attached pictures with the filament after unload (because of clicking and not extruding). It seems quite normal for me. Can you see something strange? The diameter except the edge itself is not bigger then 1.75.

Yep - that photo has me conclude heat break jam.   I've got to say I never believe the heat break could cause these jams; then one day I got to a part that had a bazillion retractions/lifts that jams reliably at the same point, every time, regardless of what I did.  I swapped heat breaks and the part printed successfully without even a burp. So I printed it twice, just to be sure. Second time, also no issues. 

A new heat break is only a few bucks and an hours work.  Have some thermal paste on hand to apply to the heat sink side threads.

Thank you, I will give it a try, that is the last thing I have not tried yet. I was a bit skeptical as I have this heatbreak for 2.5 years and before I went to bondtech gears, I did not realize any issues. The work is minor, unless I break the termistor wire 🙂

There a chance it isn't the heat break causing your print problems, some hard fragment roiling around in the nozzle, weird effects in the filament drive gears or clogged teeth.  I had somewhat similar jamming after I had printed with a glow filament.  Cold pulls helped, but never resolved the problem; a new nozzle finally got me printing again. I never verified, but I suspect the hard material in the glow filament jammed inside the nozzle orifice where a cold pull wasn't able to dislodge it.

My next jam I could not resolve was the castle print with lots of small towers and crenelations, literally several hundred retracts per layer.  A new nozzle did not help.  I was left with the only other option: the heat break.  And that fixed it.

I tried complete extruder dissasembly several times, print new idler part so the bondtech gears sits there perfectly, checked and drilled the filament path in the extruder parts so it is clean and smooth, change the nozzle, change the ptfe tube, loose the idler spring, fasten the idler spring. Still the same. With Galaxy Black almost all prints, with other filaments only in case of very short and repeated extract/retract actions.

So the heat break part is really one of the last chances. As I told, before bondtech, no issue. If I sit next to the printer and choose "change filament" once clicking starts, I am able to print anything. But it is not really much fun 🙁

So I did it. Complete disassembly of the hotend. Replaced nozzle and heatbreak (checked ptfe tube). Very very very precisely put all back together and ... it really helped. Not sure if just heatbreak, but the combination of replacements works. No more clicking and problems. I even printed successfuly the lithophane with many retractions, which I was not able  to print, ever.

Btw this new extruder design allows you to make all these with almost no necessary disassembling of the extruder itself. Couple of screws and you can do whatever you need with hotend and put it back in three minutes, even in the enclosure. This I really appreciate.

tldr; I also had terrible difficulties with Galaxy black (batch  21.08.2019) on my MK3S. Chat support recommended lowering the temperature to 205-210C and loosening the extruder gear tensioning screw a bit

the whole story:

I printed ~5kg filament on my MK3S (~20 different sorts from various manufacturers including ~2kg glitter filament from prima3d) without any problems

on my old wanhao i printed probably 50 kg with 2 clogs (since i always have a filament cleaner in place i never had clogs)

Printed with standard settings at 215C the nozzle always clogged, filament was ground down and destroyed the PTFE tube 4 times

this is how the filament looked after i removed it with the PTFE tube (probably the gear tension was to high?):

an interesting thing i noticed was some ptfe fibre was sheared off that could have gotten into the shaft had i not looked carefully:

Support could not exclude a bad batch of filament but thought it was unnecessary to replace the nozzle/heat barrier. I'll just buy a new batch of galaxy black filament and will try with that before trying the old batch again. looks too damn sexy to give up on that.
