X-Y shift during print

About two hours into a print of 4 instances, the printing suddenly shifted 8.6mm in each direction along the X-Y Axes. This was at a height of 11.8mm ( layers set at 0.2mm )

I am having problems with filement cling to the extruder ( mentioned in another post ) but this seems so odd, I thought it would be a subject on its own. There was no warning that anything was wrong.

What would cause this problem? How could I avoid it?

The most likely cause is one of your instances warping and lifting off the print sheet enough to cause a head-crash and consequent layer shift.

So: add brim, consider using 'helper discs' (mouse ears) and protect the printer from drafts.

RE:

Thanks for responding, but all four shifting exactly the same distance in both X and Y seems o me unikely because of a crash. If you have a look at the photo with the 4 in it, that shows the shifting.

How would a complete layer shift happen to all four? These were stuck hard to the sheet. Has the machine somehow re-calibrated the print? If so, then I don't see how brims or ears would have prevented the shift.

The parts are being printed simultaneously - it's effectively one big print.  A layer shift affecting one will always affect all.

Get the print sheet thoroughly clean, adopt the methods above and you should be OK.  If the problem persists come back and provide a copy of the project as a .3mf file

Files > Save Project as

Zip the .3mf and post it here. It will contain both your part and your settings for us to diagnose.
