Where do XL owners put their spools?

I admit, I am tempted every single day to order an XL. One thing I ask myself, though, is how I would place my spools of filament.

It would not be an option for me to put the spools on those holders on the printer. With my MK4, I always print directly out of my Sunlu dryers, and I would like to do something similar with the XL, but I'm not sure how to deal with the positioning of the external filament sensors, the size of the printer and... *waves hands and points at all the things*

How do you deal with this issue? Do you perhaps have built some kind of a solution? I would very much appreciate seeing some pictures of your setup!

https://www.printables.com/model/733326-prusa-xl-spool-holder-for-ikea-trotten-or-2020-ext (see 2nd pic).

Space for 2x Sunlu S2 on each side, space for a lot of filament in the cabinet. Possibly more space on the top shelf for feeding from above. You could make a magnetic stand for the dryers, so they can't move around.

I think that I need to check if I can somehow fit a Trotten into the space I reserved for the XL. 🙂

Yes. My space is pretty much only the cabinet footprint 😉

It has levelling feet and is overall very solid. I'll put in an extra crossbar for top-feeding flexibles bypassing the bowden. The only drawback might be finding an enclosure that fits, if you ever need one. I have no issues with reasonably small (no more than hand sized) ASA and ABS parts though, as long as I make sure there's no drafts and the filament is dry.

RE:

Because of my constraints I can only use three spools on the left (but with a different spool holder https://www.printables.com/model/757248). For the other spools I use a RepRack system wallmounted above the printer https://www.printables.com/model/129024 with a simple PTFE tube adapter https://www.printables.com/model/485092

I also use a RepRack based shelf https://www.printables.com/model/478493 to for a PrintDry dryer to feed from the dryer as needed.

Not the most recent setup but I guess good enough to give you a sense:

Thank you, that demonstrates it nicely. 🙂

All mine are mounted above the machine on a backing board.

In the picture three are on Prusa's own spool holders, they mount easily with a #8 pan head screw; the loose filament at lower left is on a modified holder with skateboard bearings, it tended to overrun and tangle so that has been replaced with another Prusa mount.  The two centre mounts are for feeding flexibles direct to the nextruders bypassing the side sensors.  One of them will be replaced by a drybox 'real soon now'. (click picture to expand)

The side filament sensors have been rotated and moved to the horizontal rail above, the cables are *just* long enough:

"But", I hear you say, "The calibration pin drops out..."

Conveniently the right hand sensor has an unused tunnel *just* the right size, ready decorated with a 🙂

Interestingly, the Mk3 on the lower shelf requires the same width once all the cable are allowed for and it's only a little smaller in the Y direction so, although it's subjectively huge, the XL takes up very little more bench space when arranged like this.  Currently the Mk3 is fed from one of the spool holders above the XL, the long run isn't convenient so head scratching continues.

Cheerio,
