Soluble Supports on the XL

I know it's a bit early to be asking about printing experience on the XL, but I'm hoping to get some advanced idea on how soluble supports might work on the XL. First of all, how do soluble supports work with MMU/2 on the i3MK* printers? Is there a solid support option in Prusa Slicer? Or is it possible to do solid soluble support just at the interface with the overhang & lower-cost filament scaffold supports supporting the solid soluble supports?

Best Answer by ssill2:

soluble supports work on the MMU2S.  When you set up your print in prusaslicer you pick soluble filament like BVOH and the slicer creates a wipetower on the plate to purge to when switching between filaments.  it's pretty painful and a lot of filament is wasted in the process. The MMU2 is very limited and doesn't even support things like TPU.  There are folks that have claimed to get it to work, and there's a modified version of the extruder, mmu, and both printe and mmu firmware that claims to make it possible.  I however like to stick to stock configuration as much as possible so I'm very much looking forward to the XL.

Like a moth to the flame. you just couldn't help it could you?

😐

You just won me some money, which I will put towards a prusa XL in no less then one freaking year from now, when we actually find out the answer to this lame ass question.

I thought I'd ask an honest question that didn't require pure speculation to answer. Is there a problem with that?

I meant to say that with the current mmu you can pick full soluble supports or soluble interfaces.

I have printed with soluble supports with Prusaslicer and the MK3/MMU2. If it weren't for the MMU2 being a bit of  bother, it would work very well. So I don't see why it wouldn't work great on the XL.

I find the biggest pain with solubles on the  MMU2 is the wipe tower adhesion.  otherwise it works ok.

Soluble supports may work with the MK3 series, but if you can't get your MMU working then that point is mute.  I bought a MMU 2.0 when it was first shipped and still can't get it to work.

It's hit or miss with the MMU if it will work or not so I'm hoping with dedicated multiple extruders that I'll finally have the option I paid for.

Very much this.

Very much this. I also find that I need to purge a lot, or I get soluble in the non-soluble and non-soluble in the soluble and neither works well when cleaning the thing... and you don't want to purge expensive soluble that much 🙂

Soluble support should work better on the XL.  The lack of transition in the same hotend should make it more successful.

I don't want mine to arrive too soon. I still need to figure out how to pay for it & where to put it.

I have the same problem.  I need to build a table.  I plant on using 2x4s and plywood.
