RE: Original Prusa XL Dev Diary #1 and FAQ

I appreciate the update. The printer is still a work in progress for whatever means, shortages, performance etc. I hope they get that all sorted. I can’t help feeling the release of the BL X1C is having an influence on some of the changes they are making

I feel by the time my personal preorder position is ready(was slated for 2023) Prusa will be announcing the XL + or whatever they want to call it. I was mostly looking forward to these printers for use at my makerspace. I've been hyping them up there and telling my students how great they will be.

That is what we asked. An update. Me and i believe the majority of the people that preorder, may not be happy with the delays but we understand and prefer a working machine with standards at least like MK3, even if it takes longer, than  a quick delivery on substandard printer that needs fiddling  (MMU2 for some of us). What we would like though is for this updates to be more frequent, to keep us informed in the loop and with a feeling that things are moving along, even if it is a slower pace that we would like. I hope the next update wont be somewhere near Christmas or next year.

Great update.  Thanks.

The more detail I get, the happier I am with my purchase.

At this rate, the XL will just replace my MK3s instead of augment it, since the MK3s is taking a lot of use and wear&tear and will probably need a major overhaul by then.

Coming up on 2 months since the last update. I guess anything might be better than the previous 5 month interval, but, it sure seems Prusa isn't actually interested on delivering on the promise of more frequent news. Sure are active enough retweeting things on Twitter, though!

It will happen in October at ERRF.

Another 2 months without updates. ERRF is live and all we get is rumors predicting further delays. Pretty unsatisfying again.

The pre-order page still says early orders will be delivered before the end of the year. I’m very sceptical about that. The XL is starting to feel more and more like a failed product

Doubters have said that with the MK3S, Mini, and now the XL.  It will come.

Any one else notice in the last PrusaLive (#45 @ 1:04:39 ) that the update on the XL was "we don't have much to update on because we're still waiting on some parts" and that they are waiting on a new revision that is being built now + more time lapses are coming soon.  Followed by "I would say in a couple of weeks we should put out an update" - thanks Josef

Seems there all pretty tired with it and are hesitant on making any mention of it.

Also noticed that 'The Real Sam Prentice' did a walk about live stream on ERRF where there was an XL present, but that's all I can say. He didn't get that close to the Prusa guys.

It will be before the end of 2023.  I have no doubt about that,  It actually says Dec 2022.  Based on reports form ERRF, it sounds like that has already been ruled out,

Definitely wouldn't yet say a "failed product". The communication, absolute failure. Hopefully once Prusa gets things together and delivers, it'll be as awesome as we're all hoping. Seeing the video of the tool changing at ERRF was neat for sure. At least I have several months to play with my Bambu X1C and make a well informed decision on the XL (since a lot of others are ahead of me in XL preoders).

I am currently waiting up to 12 weeks for very expensive material deliveries for my projects.

Unfortunately, some end customers have shown less understanding for additional costs and time delays.

At the moment, and perhaps for a longer time, this will continue - therefore - patience is the order of the day.

I think Prusa tries to do the best for his customers, even if some don't have the impression 👍

wbr,

Karl

The MK3S is an evolution of a well developed platform. The mini, although innovative was a basic machine. The XL does not compare to either in terms of been a printer built of lessons of the past for Prusa. The XL is them stretching themselves to the limit. You don't work for them, although you'd like to. Try be objective.

How can you defend Prusa on this basis? They advertise 2022 and have our money yet you already believe its months away. I love my MK3S but this is not acceptable for a product launch. They have stretched themselves too much. It's not a chip shortage, it's a technical capability failure.

So you have a pre-order. I based my order on a technical product and a time frame. They are moving the goalposts at ever turn. How you can say it's not a failed product at this stage is beyond me. Currently it's a technical showcase they peddle out at certain events. It's amateur at best.

RE: Original Prusa XL Dev Diary #1 and FAQ

Vaporware isn't a product failure, it's a company failure. Until they ship something (or totally don't ship it, which, isn't outside the realm of possibility), I can't say if the product is a success or failure. So far about the only goalpost that's really moved is the delivery date. How they didn't foresee that super common components had a long lead time and they were consumers of those components (i.e. that they'd need a lot of them) is certainly a valid question that we'll never get an answer to. If we're still not seeing any ship by spring 2023 with firm delivery times for the remainder of backorders, then I think more stronger language like "failed" can really come about.
We were dealing with similar where I work. Some of our key components were upward of 18 month lead time not too terribly long ago. But, we know what we are doing, and in 2019 we had ordered a pile of those components, so the super long delays haven't impacted us. We talked to our suppliers earlier last month and the lead times are under 12 months now, and we went ahead and threw in a large order, even though we have enough on hand for 20-22 more months.

They’ve already changed the spec of the ‘ extruder’. It’s not what they touted as the great new thing! Says it all to me
