Did IKEA design this Trotten specifically for for the Prusa XL?

It seems to it fits too perfect to be a Coincidence.  Such a perfect space efficient solution - Seems like running through IKEA for hours to find the right one payed out - even though my wife nearly went mad 😀

Would this fit with spoolholders on both sides?

Yes, it would but there is only enough room to extend them on side without going over the Footprint.
Of course it is open to the sides, so big Spools could still be mounted, if not both sides are next to a wall without any space between.

Is this the one with a 55cm depth? am I right in guessing that JUST fits the feet of the XL and everything else hangs off?

That is correct - It is the 55cm depth. IMHO it still fits really well - I made a Photo from the side from 2-3 Meters away so that it is easier to judge.

(Edit: It is cut off in the preview. Please click on the photo to see more.)

What about shaking, noise by resonance etc.. Is it sturdy or is gonna drive OC people up the walls?

Model 194.296.43. If anyone owns it, let us know how sturdy is. Does it rock with the XL when it prints? I heard from several sources (TADA 3D Printing comes to mind) that if the table top is hollow the sound of the printer reverberates. Hence making the XL loud. Is that the case with this solution?

My XL hasn't arrived yet, but it's crazy that it fits so well on something under 22" deep! That's much more shallow than anything I've seen for measurements online. It almost looks like you could put sides and a back on that thing to give yourself a little semi-enclosed space and protect from drafts. Knowing an XL fits on this thing with only the screen poking out is gonna make me rethink table options for mine, before it arrives. Neat.

I did not notice that anything reverberates or rattles. IMHO the XL does not shake as much as MK3 and the Trotten is really heavy, because it is an all metal construction. For me it just works really well so far.

The only thing that isn't optimal is that I don't have a good way to place my Filament dryer. I thin I will just design and print a special mount for the filament dryer to mount it to the front right "Pole" of the Trotten.

It does seem like a match made in heaven, doesn't it? The IKEA Trotten working seamlessly with the Prusa XL is a nice find. Sometimes, those hours at IKEA really pay off! The perfect fit could be just the infill of practicality you needed for your setup. Happy printing, and kudos on the space-efficient solution!"

I've got two of these in my garage after redoing our children's room, looks like you helped me find a good use for them.

They are not sturdy, so I think they might be better utilized on top of a more solid surface such that they're more of a large cover than the entire enclosure. I'll learn more as I'm pulling mine out of storage now and will start exploring.

Scratch my previous posts. I have the 'Antonius', which I suspect is a much older version, possibly even entirely different from the Trotten. It has a similar concept and construction, but is too small to fit the XL.

RE: Did IKEA design this Trotten specifically for for the Prusa XL?

Hi folks, I am also searching for an affordable and reliable solution to building not only a stand but also an enclosure for my IKEA XL with 2 tool heads that I ordered.
I was having my MK3S which I sold to prepare for this change inside a rack following this solution and it was perfect, but this won't be big enough for the XL.
I am a bit worried about the size described on the Prusa website for the XL, seems to be incredibly big, but then if so, why it can fit so well in different smaller furniture I wonder.
I  found a YouTube video of a lady making some tests of where to position the XL and she also built this picture: (click on the image to see it full size).

I am wondering if the Trotten solution would allow me to fully enclose the printer with acrylic windows all around. Is this something anyone thought or did?

Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts!

RE:

I'm feeling sceptical about that idea.

Pro: You could move the rubber feet back a bit to lose the overhang in the back. You could also move the display somewhere else, the cable is quite long. That way 3 sides can easily be covered with sheet material of your choice. You don't need anything for the top if you use the shelf. The spaces between crossbars could be easily used for stuffing insulation sheets, as well as the underside of the top shelf.

Cons: Encasing the front with doors will be difficult, as there will be overhang. Nobody knows how the electronics will react if you enclose them long-term, they are designed to be outside the build space and not as easy to relocate as on a Mk3. With two heads only, maybe a tent is an alternative? The Creality thing someone mentioned in another thread would fit into the Trotten including 2 spools on the same side (no option for 5XL, because no space to swap spools). You could leave that open when not using it, maybe add an extra flap in the back for airflow. It's a compromise of course and might make sense if you only need it occasionally.

When considering such modifications, it’s important to ensure that any changes won’t negatively impact the printer’s functionality or safety. If you’re unsure about the long-term effects of enclosing the electronics, it might be wise to consult with the printer manufacturer or a professional. Additionally, consider the ease of access for maintenance and the potential need for ventilation to prevent overheating. Your idea of adding an extra flap for airflow is a good one, as proper ventilation is crucial for electronic components.

RE: Did IKEA design this Trotten specifically for for the Prusa XL?

Update on this ancient thread:
I have the original PR enclosure working very well on my Trotten. I didn't have to take down the printer for the Enclosure installation, only temporarily removed the Trotten top shelf to get the top part on. You can keep using the shelf, but the enclosure door won't fully open to engage the holding magnets. I have a fix for this here: https://www.printables.com/model/986588-prusa-xl-enclosure-hack-for-ikea-trotten

Apart from that I only turned one side of my spool holders over because the enclosure would otherwise be in the way of loading the spools.
