Any real XL prints/reviews?

I don't know if is a generalized issue, but it seems concerning for a professional machine of this price and caliper. Does anyone else have this issue? Should we be concerned about this?

Well. it's not really a professional machine, it's high-end hobbyist and fairly cheap even then.  The ghosting pictures are deliberately enhancing the traces, my guess is that if the cosmetics matter they will be hidden as soon as you sand and paint the part.  Most users won't notice them and even interference fitting, where it might matter, won't be attempted without surface preperation as a matter of course.

Try halving the print speed if it really matters to you.

Well... lots of 3D printing farms will disagree with you.

And if the MK3 is professional enough for them, the XL surely is PRO enough for me.

There are more expensive machines out there, but unless you must print PEEK or something exotic... XL is plenty professional for most design studios (like mine). What is in your opinion what makes a really professional machine?

Fairly positive pre-review.  Comment section is predictable, every other post is "too expensive and Bambulab!" - it's as if you could somehow miss the print volume and expandability to 5 toolheads.  The main criticism I have of the XL at this point (other than availability) is that it's taking so long to get even an alpha input shaper firmware in our hands.  Of course I don't want it if it's not ready, I just wish that it were ready 🙂

After printing with it for 2 months, it is ready and very reliable.

it has been said over and over again ... but I still can't accept the idea that after (almost) two years I still haven't got my printer .. while others who ordered months after me allready have one .. just because I ordered one in kit in stead of assembled.
Mindblown.

i'm waiting to change my 2 semi to 5h so i;m in for the XL. But it is actually too expensive and has nothing actually to show against other printers (i.e. bambulabs) if you are not interested in the toolhead option. This is a reprap printer which needs twiking and comes two years delayed with promises of input shaper somewhere in the future. Fot the price and the "Prusa name tax" all the above shouldn't exist. Even the multi head options like printing with different nozzles in different layers are not completely there yet. Not everyone considers a fair price 3 to 4 thousand for a prnter with future features options that other brands provide now. And you can get your printer sooner that a year delay.

RE: Any real XL prints/reviews?

Hello everyone.  I was looking around and found this thread.  I just got mine and decided to throw together a 'review'.  I don't really do product reviews as I try and give people the information they need to make their own purchasing decisions.  I'll be making a few videos giving my impressions as I dig into it and use it.  So far, it's been pretty great, albeit slower than I'd want (no input shaping).  I like it considerably more than my Bambu, which has been quite fussy and unreliable.  But that's of course just a single data point.  Let me know if there's anything you're specifically wanting to see.

Mindblown.

Prusa's delays have been bad, no doubt about it. I ordered my 2H kit in 2021 and it arrived last week. But assembly was easy and the printer has Just Worked so far. PET-G, ABS, PLA, even multi-material, all good. I do need an enclosure for larger ABS parts because without it I'm limited to small ABS parts which I could have printed just as easily on my MK2.

Not everybody has been so lucky. I've seen reports of heatbeds arriving bent, nextruders not working, and even one case an x-axis assembled upside down. There was a poll and 1/3 of delivered printers had at least one problem. Some of those were resolvable but that's still leaving people with a bad first impression.

I think it must be chaos over at Prusa right now. They've had multiple product launches, issues with supply chains, pre-orders taking years to fulfil, and a new competitor stealing their customers. They must have everybody working around the clock working on assembly or semi-assembly. I feel for them. I don't work in manufacturing but I know it sucks when crunches happen and you've got upset customers.

Anyway, I'm happy and I think the delay was worth it. I wanted an XY printer with multiple toolheads and Prusa has delivered, albeit 18 months later than I would have liked. It does work as advertised. It's not perfect and I can already see ways it can be improved. But I can't find anything else at this price-point with this feature set. I hope yours is one of the lucky ones without problems and that it arrives soon.

RE:

I wanted to provide my experience with my XL5 so far. This is as close to an apples-to-apples comparison as I can get with my MK3S. The MK3S never got an extruder upgrade. I did replace the stepper motor with a Moons to try and fix the VFA issue, but couldn't see any difference at all. I left it on because it didn't get as hot as the stock motor, and prevented heat creep in an enclosure. The filament is the same, and the layer height is the same. It's a pretty huge difference. I'm happy with the quality. These are both printed at 0.3mm layers.

For the money, your best to grab a BX1c , Then maybe a Neptune 4 max. I think Prusa was too late to the game and can no longer justify the outrageous prices for their new products.  I might even go VORON with tool changer at this point

RE: Any real XL prints/reviews?

Which nozzle (0.6?) are you using? I just got my XL SH and changed the nozzle to 0.4 in order to compare it to my MK3S+.

As I am still testing, I can not say, that there is a huge difference in quality.

Prusa will defenitly improve certain things over the next weeks and months. When I started with the MK3 I had various issues but now, after swapping some things and moving up to the MK3S+ (with the MMU2s) it works perfect and the XL will definitly not replace that. The XL is for different purposes. When I need very detailed or small things I would go for a Resin-Printer. Perhaps I will look at one next year ;-). Getting addicted in a certain way. 🙄

That is settings and nozzle size and not the printer.

RE: Any real XL prints/reviews?

The left print is the XL with everything stock. 0.6mm nozzle and 0.3mm layer height. It was my third print after two test prints to check extrusion multiplier and dimensional accuracy. The right print is the MK3S with Moons motor, 0.4mm nozzle, and 0.3mm layer height. I'd already done many calibration test prints on it before printing a bunch of junk.

My apologies then, I thought the right print was from the XL. The Left print looks good, well nice consistent layers. The right print was the one I thought was the XL.

RE: Any real XL prints/reviews?

Same as me. The quality of the MK3 as you have shown is really poor. That is not normal. Whenever you get something from the Prusa Store, think of a 0.4 nozzle for your XL

Nozzle 0.4mm

Heater Block

Thermistor

Heater

I would go for everything. Makes swapping the nozzle much easier. 😉

0.4mm nozzle is not need on the XL with the right settings.  I am able to very near quality with the 0.6mm

RE: Any real XL prints/reviews?

I just tested both printers (MK3S+ and XL) with "identical" parameters (0.4 nozzle, 0.15 quality layer). I  chose the 3DBenchy Model. There was absolutly no difference between the results. The MK3 took about 1h 43 min and the XL 1h 20 min.

The pictures I took are not that good to be posted here. I think I chose the wrong filament colour (black).

I have printed some other things and I am still very happy (lucky) about the quality. There is not difference. With the 0.6 nozzle I had the impression that it was better for bigger parts as it seemed to be a bit more "rough". Not that it looked bad. When you have bigger parts you look at them from a greater distance and they are perfect.
