RE: Loud Rattles from Hotend Assembly

Yeah same here, if anything it's even worse now since the printer goes faster with IS.

Adding a large 24 inch paver stone under the printer with some foam under did help some tho.

I know it's not on the XL, but I get same rattle noises on my MK4 at specific speeds.
I changed all the linear bearings and it helped a little, but it still rattles on specific speeds (about 50mm/s strait, so 100mm/s in diagonal).

I think it can't be solved, as it seems to be a resonating frequency of the printer it-self...

I hoped that the XL would not be touched by this issue, but it seems not. As it's driving me crazy with my MK4, I'm starting to wonder if I should keep my pre-order or not...

RE: Loud Rattles from Hotend Assembly

There are a few things I have noticed that are noisy:

1) LEDs on right and left: the white diffusor is not fixed in place (and probably the strip inside of it either), the casing is also only held in place at the ends, so it all rattles under vibrations; Waiting for support to send me instructions how to pull LED stips out and probably glue them together or something.
2) Linear guide bearings are not super quiet either ( ); Waiting for support to send me compatible replacements to try out (the brand THK seems to be good if they are originals, which I have no reason to believe they are not)
3) Large panels from sheet metal like the bottom one are acting as speakers, which I plan to dampen with some sound absorbing foam
4) Back cover of the print head can also rattle when triggered with enough force
5) The root of all noises though appears to be stepper motors, it is then propagating to other parts of the printer

I also got response from support representatives that it is expected that printers of this size would be loud and have resonanse, yet my similarly sized Creality CR-5 Pro H at the same place was so quiet (after replacing fans with Noctua/Sunon MagLev) that I could sleep in the same room while it was printing. So it is not just size, the thing could have been quieter, but it is not and that is an issue.

Very disappointed so far, that level of vibrations and resonance is not acceptable on $2000+ machine if you ask me. Hopefully it is fixable with firmware upgrades or changes to the way stepper motors are controlled, but I'll probably be looking for replacement motors if there is such option and it actually fixes the issue.

Are the specifications of the motors and linear bearings stated anywhere? I am looking for replacement parts, and with prusas responses detailed in this thread it doesn't seem worth talking to them about

All bearing I have are THK SRS12GN, not sure what would be the compatible models of different design/from other brands though.

I applied some of the fixes shown in those videos, and it definitely helped (namely the ones around the printhead to stop vibrations). I'd say about 30% reduction in the loudest roars from the extruding while moving diagonally.  The "squeak" sound of fast travel moves is now the primary thing that can be heard (probably more after input shaping made that even faster).

I am now very suspicious of my X axis bearing block. When the toolhead is stationary I can rock it left to right very slightly, but can feel/hear the knock. I have removed all casings, tightened bolts as much as I dare, it still knocks.

The effect is amplified by clamping the belts against the rail to hold it still. It's as if the bearing block is twisting on the rail.

I have removed the toolhead to the belt mounting plate and can still reproduce it (although it is more difficult due to reduced leverage, the toolhead being further from the bearing amplifies the movement).

Also, when printing, I can significantly reduce rattle (on a move I know is typically noisy) just by putting some slight sideways pressure on only the spring strip (which rotates the toolhead assembly and bearing against the bearing rail)

It's fear it's going to be very difficult to show this to support

Same fix here, a screw and a plastic piece to tightens where head 5 should be mounted. Removed the loudest noise

There is a metal part inside the back profile where the toolhead(s) mount. Did you try holding/securing it in place and try again? This did fix the resonating sound for me.

I tried also to fix the Mounting Rail at 5th and 4th Toolhead place in the Profile.
Reduced the Noise a little bit.

But on my semi assembeld Dual Toolhead version, I have the noise Problem only on Printhead two.
The first printhead is much quieter than the second.
So it can't be the Linear Bearing.

In my case, I would assume that it is more a selfresonace caused maybe by the locking mechanisem of the second toolhead.
It happens also in the mid area with higher movementspeeds.

RE:

My take on some of the noise:

Panels on the side: https://www.printables.com/model/763580-side-panel-resonance-dampener-for-orignial-prusa-x

Panels on the back: https://www.printables.com/model/763607-back-panel-resonance-dampener-for-original-prusa-x

And for the tool head mounting points on the metal bar (that can rattle if no 3rd to 5th toolhead is mounted), I plan to use that one: https://www.printables.com/model/724606-prusa-xl-2t-rattling-noise-dampeners-cancels-rattl

I used Ecosound Macsound panels (20mm for sides and under printer and 5mm on top of the bottom panel) to greatly reduce resonance of panels and they do not cost a lot either.

However motors are still crazy loud at some speed and direction combination and print head is moving loudly as well. Unfortunately I don't think those can be fixed quite as easily.

6.0.2 firmware (with Phase Stepping calibration) + stealth mode improved situation significantly.
Calibration claims it reduced X vibration by 96% and Y vibration by 94%.
