Input shaping SUX

I have had more problems with input shaping.  When I print with non-input shaping, I get decent prints.  With input shaping, I get the following:

1) filament not feeding

2) Filament not extruding properly

3) filament skipping

4) print stopping in the middle of a print job.

5) print not starting in the proper place on the build plate.

6) Nozzle crashes.

I am printing with PETG using the standard .4mm nozzle.

With the standard XL selected, I have no problems and getting decent prints.  It just takes longer.  Software for input shaping is BUGGY.

I have the same issues with the MK4.

I should have gone with the Bambu, but the Bambu doesn't have a toolchanger or removable PEI build plates.

Prusa really needs to up their software game.  Both the XL firmware (software) and PrusaSlicer have more bugs then a septic tank full of roaches.  Ditto for the MK4.

My guess is that nobody designs software anymore.  I have direct experience with this.  I have been in the IT business for over 50 years.

This is really the last printer I will get from Prusa.  I am so fed up with the software bugs.

I am going to send this to Prusa.

RE:

I had some issues at first, but a recalibration, as required from updating the firmware in my case, fixed it. I've been printing PETG for the last 3 days.

I do however have, prior to today, to continually adjust the z-level when starting a print. The last 3 prints yesterday/today have required zero interaction (knock on wood).

I hope you get your issue resolved. Much better machine than what I expected.

I have recalibrated the machine.  The problems are with the firmware and Prusaslicer.  If I don't use input shaping, I get good prints.  With input shaping, it's a mess.  Without input shaping, the temps aren't displayed, and sometimes it prints way above the bed.  For both the XL and the MK4, they don't play nice with Octoprint, and the Prusa networking simply isn't mature and can't do what Octoprint can do.

I don't have any of those problems with my MK4.  I don't use IS much.  I only use it for prototyping.  Have you tried upping the nozzel temp to the max range for the filament?  IS is so fast the filament needs to move faster. Hoter filament moves easier and faster.

The problems are with the firmware and Prusaslicer.

Then maybe put in a bug report for the exact problem you are saying is the issue. If you've isolated it, fix it. If not, tell them what the problem is and the solution.

Otherwise it seems like you are shaking your fists at the sky, blaming anything, and poopooing advice from others.

Good luck, sir.

Nah.  Told them about it last release.  I just got ignored.  I am just tired of buggy software.

I find the IS on the mini and Mk4 is unusable unless you are printing something large and a single shape. Changing from part to part it just ends up crashing into the parts and ruining prints.  On the XL, I have much better luck, I use it all the time and it seems not to have the same issue with 'clanging' on previous printed parts, I don't know why. I was really impressed with the IS when it first came out, but it has its limits.

What material are you printing, and what version of the firmware are you using?  I never print PLA.

I find IS works ok (not great) on the MK4, but only for PETG.  Other materials have to be printed without IS, and CF materials won't stick to the PEI sheet.  On my XL, it's a mess.  And neither machine plays nice with Octoprint.  I also find the MK4 filament sensor to be flaky.  In the middle of a print job (with lots of filament on the spool) the MK4 will think the filament has run out and the printer stops.

Using Prusa chat is a total waste of time, and if you try to email support, you get a minimum of a two day turnaround.

I am thinking of going back to my old MK3/S to print CF filament.

Prusa's quality control and software (including firmware) has seriously deteriorated.

Steve can only complain about Prusa all the time. Bambu is sooo much better....MiMiMiMiMi...

yes my god then buy a Bambu and then please leave us alone. Nobody really wants someone like you.

Since IS came out I’ve been using it exclusively with an XL, printing PLA (smooth sheet) and PETG (textured sheet). No issues what so ever.

As you will know with software, unless the issue can be reproduced on another machine then it’s going to be next to impossible to fix it. And as the software works on other machines then there has to be something with your machine that is different, or with the filament, environment etc.

It might be worth trying to find a local maker space and or someone else with 3D printing experience who can come take a look in person. A fresh pair of eyes so to speak.

RE: Input shaping SUX

I originally had issues with input shaper, but have now found a solution that is working perfectly. Have you noticed that there are both XL filament profiles and XLIS profiles? (This is there only for PLA on the 0.4mm nozzle profile and is not there for the 0.6mm profile)

The difference between the XL and the XLIS filament profiles is the temperature used on the nozzle. For each material, I am needing to increase the temperature by 10 - 15 degrees for a good extrusion. For example, when using PETG, the temperatures that I am needing to use are 255 for first layer and 245 for other layers. PLA is needing 230 for first layer and 220 for the rest.

After this change, I am getting results like this in Input Shaper:

This was made with PLA gold.

I hope these tips help. 😉

Any chance that octoprint is the problem?  Maybe try using PrusaConnect and see if anything different happens when IS is enabled.  Like most others, I’ve been running IS exclusively since it went GA on my XL5 with no problems.  I dropped OctoPrint a while back and have been using PrusaLink for the mk3s and the built in print server on the XL.

I've also been getting great results with the IS profiles.
