Small first layer issues at start of line
You can see from the picture that though first layer adhesion is mostly good and the calibration test looks good when the printer starts with a new line, it doesn't adhere very well for the first 1-3mm. This is an AmazonBasics PLA which seems to exhibit this problem more than the Prusament I have.
Any ideas what this might be?
Here is a bench I've previously printed. Looks good aside from the missing inner part of the D

If you worry about hitting the z height adjustment limit, you can move the PINDA/SPINDA up one notch or two. Then re calibrate the first layer and the z height adjustment should move to closer to -1.0

Judging from the benchy picture, I think you can lower the z height by a fraction more. Perhaps another 0.05 mm which will fill in more of the gaps, as well as helping the adhesion.
RE: Small first layer issues at start of line
That has helped - the D stuck on my benchy test. However, I worry there is something else wrong, the value is down all the way to -1.990 I was cautious to push it that far, I could have made it -2 - the maximum.
Is this a symptom of another problem?

I’d have said textured sheet on pla + z height not low enough. I’m pretty much exclusively using the amazonbasics pla and have to run it hotter and slower, but it sticks to the smooth build plate no problems with the correct z height.

Makes sense thank you.
I followed the MINDA guide which involved putting a credit card/cable tie under the sensor. I assume this means I need a slightly thicker credit card so that the sensor is further away from the build plate.

I'm happy with the way things are printing now. I think my troubles calibrating the first layer where a symptom of following the MINDA guide; despite doing this to the letter the calibration was still at the maximum of the range.
Now that I've moved the sensor up, I'm able to calibrate at around -0.75 which has made things a bit easier!

Great news 🙂
