Issues with prusament jet black pla

I bought a new spool of prusament jet black this week and it is failing and clogging nozzel on prints.  When it fails it starts underextruding and the extruder starts it infamous clicking and the filament quits coming out.  I try to purge the filament and it wont come out but it will unload.  I heat the nozzel to 260 use the needle then do a couple of cold pulls and it works perfect until i print with this new spool of filament.  I printed the exact same gcode file with prusament galaxy silver pla and they work perfectly.  I changed to the bondtech heatbreak about a year ago and it has not clogged since i installed it.  In fact it has worked great.  I have tried drying the filament overnight but no change. Any help or ideas would be appreciated i am really frustrated with it.

here are a couple examples of prints i have tried.

RE: Issues with prusament jet black pla

You sure it's PLA and not PETG?  This looks exactly what I'd expect from trying to print PETG at PLA temperatures.

hmm never thought of that. the order says pla and the box says pla but wonder if it is possible it was really petg??  maybe i should slice as though it is petg and see what happens. cant be worse than the current disaster can it?

RE: Issues with prusament jet black pla

so using your great suggestion i printed one of the failed prints at 245 C. i didn’t increase the bed temp i left it at 60. i was a little worried about setting to 85 if it was indeed pla. any ways it is probably the best jet black print i have done it worked perfectly.  is there any way to verify that it is indeed pla as spool and label suggest versus petg??   i am now trying some of the bigger prints that failed to see if they work as well. thanks for your insight i would never have increased temp otherwise.

RE: Issues with prusament jet black pla

There have been a few threads here on how to distinguish between PLA and PETG because it seems to happen more often than one might think. Try googling for it, I don't have references to specific threads handy. Some people say PETG has a distinct smell. I have personally experienced a case of ABS vs PLA mix-up. Stuff happens.

@stubby - Since you say this is Prusament, you can reach out to Prusa with the serial number. Every roll is supposedly tracked so they my tell you that it was a screw up on their part - it does happen.

yea i did but they couldn’t say if there was a goof up or not. they wanted a video of me bending it so they could determine if it is really petg. i haven’t had a chance to do that. but i feel pretty confident it is since i don’t think pla would produce a very good print with temps of 260 nozzle and 90 bed.  the interesting thing is i also ordered lipstick red prusament pla at same time and it was also petg even tho it said pla??  it printed perfect at temps listed above but clogged and failed every time  at 220/60 tenps.  so at this point i figure something must be wrong with printer can’t be 2 goof ups so loaded up spool i know is prusament pla and it printed perfect at pla settings.

RE: Issues with prusament jet black pla

Yeah, PETG should bend without breaking almost at perfect 180deg turn. Whereas PLA should break/snap. That is messed up that you got two incorrectly labeled rolls. That is a good thing (and a bad thing). If these rolls are mostly automated, then an error in one should show as an error in the batch that was processed. That speaks to good process in manufacturing where everything is repeatable (even errors - and they do happen); certainly an issue in quality control, but good manufacturing process in place. The bad thing is that in that case there are others out there suffering the same fate as you and probably do not know it.

That was a great initial "guess" by @fuchsr as well. He nailed it since the very beginning. One would have hoped Prusa would have nailed it before @stubby came to the forum, but that is the reason this forum is such a great place; people like @fuchsr can share their wealth of experience and solve problems fast.

I know this topic is solved.
But couldn't you just smell if it is PLA or PETG?
I my nose, those have a very different, disctinctive smell when printing.

I guess it depends on the sensitivity of your nose. I can clearly smell ABS but PLA and PETG,  I can't smell a difference.

yea my sniffer is not that good and covid didn’t help any lol. i can occasionally smell pla but the suspect rolls had no smell i could discern. for me the fact that they printed perfectly as petg (260/90) but failed at pla(220/60) settings was conclusive.

Well. I guess my nose got, what my eyes are missing... 😋
It was just an idea.
But fascinating (or scary) that somewhere in the production process those filaments could somehow be labeld wrongly in 3 different places.

lol.  i agree that was why i was so suspect of something else being wrong. yea,  i thought prusa might have been a bit more interested than they seemed to be. idk. i need to get back to them with the bending of the filament video they ask for, just been super busy.
