Fundamental misunderstanding: Top layer never appears in slicer

Hello, I've had tons of success with my Prusa but I keep running into this problem and could use some help. I have a square-ish object with a flat top. On the top I have some detail (in this case some pretty simple flat surfaces). When I slice the object in Prusa Slicer with default settings, it always ignores everything on the top. I usually work around this by rotating my object but today is the day I learn what is going on. See the attached pics. You see the object in the slicer and then you see the sliced result:

And the answer is there is an option for "detect thin walls". All is well now!

Yes. Detect thin walls can help but it can also have undesired side effects elsewhere in a model. I think it's better to design upfront with the capabilities of the printer in mind. 

Formerly known on this forum as @fuchsr -- until all hell broke loose with the forum software...
