Z offset and Octoprint in a toxic relationship

Prusa-Firmware-Buddy 4.2.1-final+2072

After each print using Octopint I have to turn-off/on my prusa Mini because the z-offset is not working as expected and the nozzle ends being too high. Also the Z live adjustment does not have any effect.

After to check my slicer (Prusa Slicer using MINI default settings) and Octopint config I'm not adding any gcode that can cause this.

RE: Z offset and Octoprint in a toxic relationship

There are a few issues specified here, so can you detail this question?

RE: Z offset and Octoprint in a toxic relationship

There are some known issues with the Mini firmware that cause Live-Z drift when calibration is done at different temperatures. My understanding is that Prusa is aware of this issue and is expecting to release a firmware fix in the near future. Search through the many existing discussions on this topic for more info.

A rumored intermediate "fix" is to let your hotend get up to temp and then wait a few mins for the MINDA temperature to stabilize. This makes sense and worth a try, but alas, there are a few things that don't compute for me here.

With the original Mk3, the PINDA probe needed to be consistently warmed to 35C to get reliable readings. This was addressed in firmware and with the release of the PINDAv2 probe. With the Mini, the MINDA probe seems to have similar temperature sensitivities. Many have reported success by allowing the MINDA to warm up for a few minutes before doing mesh bed leveling. Interesting, looking at the Prusa GitHub issues page, it sounds like letting the MINDA cool between prints is the key. Prusa is apparently working on incorporating a fix into an upcoming firmware release. Anybody interested in the details might want to look at the GitHub pages.

@bobstro: Awesome! Good to hear that this is more than just a rumor I heard on the interwebs. Cheers!

Well, it's a confirmation from a random guy on the interwebs for what that's worth. 😀

The github page has the "non-fake" news.

But it is confirmation just the same.  LOL!

@derenma

Yes sure:

  1. Z offset is inconsistent (looks by the responses it's related with MINDA and how it responses to temp changes)
  2. Z live adjustment is not working when using Octoprint.

Thanks!

@mkb

Are you setting Z offset in the slicer and on the printer? I may be wrong, but this could be part of your issue. I'd suggest leaving the z offset at 0 in slicer and adjusting it on the printer.

With the default Octoprint set up you cannot access the printer settings, but if you set the live Z before starting the print from Octoprint it will remain at that level for the print. Personally I've added the gcode that pre-heats the minda before starting the print and I've not had to change the offset for months.

This is a real problem that I've run into as well, would be curious to hear solutions that anyone has come up with. I'm currently using Octoprint to level the bed, and then going back to printing directly from the machine because it is respecting the live-Z adjustments.

I don’t have the printer anymore. But I solved the issue after update to the Super PINDA sensor. If you have the first revision of the Mini I will recommend you to update your PINDA. Cheers.
