Want to upgrade my ancient MINI+ firmware, but I'm hesitant...

I am still running on V4.x.x FW (the first one with PressureEQ I think),
as I have major concerns to introduce breaking issues when updating the FW due to current open bugs.
Have a hard time to gauge how prominent bugs are which I see in the respective forums and GitHub. They have 300 open tickets atm.
Somehow, every other bug I see is one I defintiely would not want to have...
But on the other hand, I think all the people buying a MINI right now with newest FW already on it,
still can work with it with all those bugs, right?

But I want to try the new features, like input shaper, improved connectivity and all the other changes between late 4.x.x. and early 6.x.x.
I know you can downgrade the FW if something goes wrong.
Is this a "safe" process, or can I easily ruin my printer with a downgrade?
I would be more than willing to do the experiment, but only if a rollback is proven to work.
Yes, I'm a bit paranoid about this "never change a running system" thing... maybe because of my day job. XD

RE:

I'm still on firmware 5.1.2 which was released at December 15, 2023 and it has Input Shaper - this indeed makes a difference in speed.
Other features were not that exciting for me to make a jump for it.
But I guess new PrusaSlicer with scarf seam may encourage me to bump the firmware, the 6.2.x has some features I've been waiting for.

I have an out of the box stock Mini+ that has 5.1.2 on it, I never did get Input Shaper to work on it. However I am not sure if the shaking in my hands is due to the fact that I am old or if it is fear of boogering up my Mini+. Some day I will update and see what happens, I feel your pain.

if you have 5.1.2 then it supports Input Shaping, just make sure to readd the printer profiles in PrusaSlicer and select one for the printer and slice the model to get the gcode for it.

I'm still running 4.x.x.
Basically, I only want to know if rollback of the FW is a reasonably reliable process.
Then I can simply try the newst stable FW.
It's just that my MINI currently does flawlessly what it can do. So I don't want to trade a couple minutes of printing time with noticable new issues.
I'm aware you guys can't really help me here.
I just need some confidence that flashing the old FW is as unproblematic as flashing the new one.
Especially since the new one brings a new Bootloader n stuff. Which can (in my mind) make a downgrade "non-trivial".

Yes, it's possible to downgrade firmware. I can personally confirm it possible to downgrade from the 5.1.2 alpha to 4.4.1.

4.4.1 is when the new bootloader was introduced, and is the latest stable firmware before input shaping was introduced. It should also allow reverting to older firmware than this, since the bootloader is independent of the firmware.

  • Hit reset button
  • Double-press knob
  • Hit FLASH when prompted
