Steppers overheating and "sizzling" when printer is paused.

I recently paused a print, and after leaving the printer in the paused state for about an hour, I noticed very harsh popping noises emanating from it.
Investigating it, I found the steppers to be the source of the sound, and that they were extremely hot to the touch, especially the extruder, which was much hotter than its normal operating temperature.

Is this something I should be concerned about, or is it normal for this to happen when a print is paused?
The extruder stepper was honestly so hot that I was worried it was warping the PETG mount (though I'm unable to see any visible damage), and along with the "sizzling" sounds the stepper was making, I'm pretty confident this is anomalous behavior.

I'm worried that my mini either has bad steppers, bad drivers, or that the current firmware (6.0.0) is bugged.
The printer does print just fine at the moment, but I'd like to ameliorate the issue and be safely able to pause a print.

Thanks for any suggestions.
