Nozzle height adjustment bottoms out! Mini+

When trying to adjust the nozzle height on my Mini+ after changing from smooth steel sheet to the textured steel one I reach the lowest setting of -2,0 before the nozzle is low enough for a good first layer. When printing on the smooth steel sheet its calibrated to -1,920 (close to the lowest value) which gives a nice first layer. I've checked the Superpinda height with a zip tie according to the recommended height adjustment and its fine. It seems my factory setting of the nozzle height is a bit to high, how can I reset that value so the range of the Live Z or First layer calibration is within the required range?

RE: Nozzle height adjustment bottoms out! Mini+

From my experience, distance of about 1mm (zip tie) between bed and SuperPINDA is a bit too small. Ok, it works usually, but Z-offset will always be very close to negative limit (which is -2.00). Because of that, I moved SuperPINDA up for about 0.5mm (didn't measured exactly) and now my Z-offset is -0.88 for successful first layer calibration.
Do not "adjust" height of the nozzle! -mount and tighten the nozzle according to manual.

Got some great help from the chat support (Tommy) who wrote:

"-Hi Urban, in this case the PINDA itself is a bit too sensitive and thus it triggers a bit early, and the compensation has to be quite extreme as you have here. While there isn't a software fix to this, we can simply raise the PINDA probe SLIGHTLY (about 1mm or so) and it should be well within range then when you redo the first layer calibrations.
-Just be sure to reset the values to 0 when you start to avoid risking damage to the sheet"

I did just that, had to adjust it about 2mm, then I had -1,150 instead on the smooth sheet and -1,450 on the textured sheet! 🙂

The Super PINDA should have about 1.5 mm distance between nozzle and SPINDA, so that you’re around -1 when your Live Z is correct. (For the old PINDA, it was 0.8mm).

Instructions are in Step 16 of https://help.prusa3d.com/en/guide/how-to-replace-superpinda-mini-mini_179912 (Mini) or
https://help.prusa3d.com/en/guide/how-to-replace-superpinda-mk3s-mk3s_179920 (Mk3S)

I put this little helper on Prusaprinters.org to help position the SPINDA: https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/57192-spinda-height-adjustment-tool-mounts-into-3030-ext. Works better than zip ties or credit cards, which have less well-defined heights.

For an illustration of relationship of distance of PINDA to nozzle and sheet, see

@fuchsr

Thx for reply! Used the guide that you linked to when I adjusted the pinda probe, worked nice! Your helper seems like a good idea,  I just eyeballed the distance using the threads!

RE: Thanks

@fuchsr first post here and it's to thank you very much, I was pulling the last of my hair out trying to set the pinda height on my new mini+

Everywhere I looked it says 1 credit card width, all videos on youtube and even step 16 on the link you gave above says 1 credit card.

I set mine to 1.5 and z to -1 and it was instant perfection! Thank you so much.

This is my first 3d printer so was getting a little worried 🙂

Cheers James

edit: ps, and thank you for the 1.5mm spacer tool!! will be printing that out tomorrow. 😍

I have no idea why none of the support pages have been updated. The Superpinda has been out for a long time now.

Or they should say if you use a card card, it only works with the Amex Platinum....  might be just thick enough 😊

.

lol

Yes it would have saved a lot of hassle if they updated the support pages, seems a simple quick fix to do.

Thanks again
