MK3S+: Offline after new router (despite same SSID and password)

Dear readers, can anyone give a hint?

I changed to a new, more powerful router  and although I'm using the same SSID and password, my MK3S+s won't connect. My MK4 automatically re-connected, except all of my MK3S+. Is there an easy way to fix that? I don't want to re-initialize the entire wifi on each printer, since I have a small (10+) printfarm.

Thanks a lot in advance & best wishes,

Constantin

Does your new router use WPA3 exclusively? You can check if the router has a compatibility mode that allows devices with WPA2 and WPA3. The ESP modules on the Prusa printers do not support WPA3, if I recall correctly.

I will check that. But just for some clarification, in case needed: The non-connecting printers are only MK3s which I "upgraded" using an Rasperry Pi.

But non the less, I'll take a look at the Router's settings.

🙂 Thanks for taking your time in helping me

The router had both activated "WPA2 + WPA3". I set to WPA2 only and see whether it helps (they're currently printing - maybe they need a restart).

If the router accepts both there is no need to disable one of the encryption types. You could take a screenshot of the IP settings with the old router (in case this is still possible) on a laptop connected to it via WiFi and another screenshot of the IP settings with the new router. And then compare both for differences. Or do screenshots with the WiFi settings on both routers and compare for any differences.

I like that idea, thanks :). Will do tomorrow asap. Your feedback gives me hope it's an easy & quick fix, thank you.

RE:

Some more ideas:

- double check the channels are not in ranges that are outside of the given country and ensure are on the least colliding channels (this is really important, make sure to select proper country for the new router)

- double check to use standard 20MHz channel width on 2.4Ghz and do not modify any wifi signal strength/power settings, but you may need to tune antennas and check for the signal strength, different frequencies propagate differently

- 2.4 Ghz wifi should be on b/g/n
- 2.4 Ghz wifi should be on WPA2 PSK/AES

- make sure to have separate wifi network names for 2.4 and 5Ghz, so better keep original name on 2.4Ghz, and new name on 5GHz (like add a suffix '-5' to it).

Having separate SSIDs for 2.4 and 5 GHz is not necessary. If your device just speaks 2.4 GHz, it will never be confused by the one with the same SSID on 5 GHz. And devices that can use both frequency ranges can jump seamlessly according to their needs, or be switched over by the router. FRITZ!Boxes do that, Mikrotik routers do that as well.

RE:

true, 2.4GHz devices will connect only to the 2.4GHz network, but usually you want to avoid devices to jump between the networks, usually less devices per frequency range is better. Moreover usually connectivity depends on the signal strength and unfortunately if you have two networks with the same SSID name then usually 2.4GHz is with higher power levels (due to standard spec) which ends in more devices going to that network instead of sticking to 5GHz.
Switching depends both on the router and the client capabilities, and from my experience with both Fritzboxes and mikrotiks and some (really ugly) devices I strongly recommend different SSID names.

I splitted the SSIDs, but still no improvement. All MK3 are shown on the routers page as "non-successful connection attempts". The MK4 stays nicely connected. Strangely, when I switch to an open network, disabling the WPA2 password, the printers still can't connect. I also did a wifi-reset on one of the MK3's rasperry Pies, still no improvement. I'm getting a bit clueless on that matter. The router is very new, supports WIFI6 and just came on the market 2 months ago (Fritzbox 7690), so there probably are not many others (yet) who are facing the same problem.

If you understand German, scroll down to the last section on this page: https://avm.de/service/wissensdatenbank/dok/FRITZ-Box-7690/509_WLAN-Gerat-stellt-keine-Verbindung-zur-FRITZ-Box-her/
If you do not understand German, it basically says to check for an option "enhanced wifi compatibility for older devices", and to deactivate a feature called "PMF" (Protected Management Frames).

Thanks a lot - I'll do the steps. I also noticed it's not just wifi6, it actually is WIFI-7 that I have (which is crazy new). I'll try to lower that wifi standard in the 2.4 GHz only and see whether it helps as well. I will keep you updated - but many thanks for your input.

RE:

Can anyone tell me, whether the MK3's LAN uses the standard "WLAN 802.11b" only? That would be the only clue I can have, since this standard is not supported by my router. I'm running the Rasperry Pi Zero 2 W and on Rasperry's website they say its wlan supports "802.11 b/g/n".  Am I correct in assuming that this is not the cause for my problem, since there also in "g and n"?

Thanks a lot :).

RE: MK3S+: Offline after new router (despite same SSID and password)

I have a Raspi Zero 2 W connected to my WiFi. It says 52 Mbit/s, that would be 802.11g, as 802.11b only goes up to 11 Mbit/s. It says "encryption key: off" in the output, but the network is encrypted with "WPA2/WPA3 PSK"

[root@Nist-Cam-01 ~]# iwconfig wlan0
wlan0     IEEE 802.11  ESSID:"xxxxxxx"
          Mode:Managed  Frequency:2.412 GHz  Access Point: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
          Bit Rate=52 Mb/s   Tx-Power=31 dBm
          Retry short limit:7   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality=44/70  Signal level=-66 dBm
          Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:1626  Invalid misc:0   Missed beacon:0

By now I went to everything and nothing worked. I'll now contact the router manufacturer and once I found a solution I will post it here :).

Thanks for your help and time.

Best wishes,

Constantin

Did you try to switch off "Protected Management Frames" in the security settings? Older devices cannot connect if this is on.

Hello Walter, I disabled PMF and also changed Wifi standard from WIFI7 to wifi 6 and tried 4 as well. Unfortunately none of this made my MK3Ss connect, they still remain in the list of "unsuccessful connection attempts". I will try tinkering more with the settings - there must be a way to solve this issue 🙂

RE: MK3S+: Offline after new router (despite same SSID and password)

This is the content of the file "wpa_supplicant.conf" on my Pi Zero 2 W running MotionEyeOS. The path may be different on your OS, but the filename should be the same. This same config has worked before when I was using a FRITZ!Box 6591 Cable and is working now together with a MikroTik HAP AX3 using WPA2/PSK and CCMP. You could experiment with different encryption parameters in the WiFi settings.

[root@Nist-Cam-01 ~]# cat /data/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
country=DE
update_config=1
ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant

network={
    scan_ssid=1
    ssid="xxxxxxxxx"
    psk="xxxxxxxxxx"
}
