New RC: 4.0.5-RC1

https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware-Buddy/releases/tag/v4.0.5-RC1

I am posting this because, being a Release Candidate, this probably isn't going to get a forum announcement. But, nonetheless, it's on GitHub for installation. (If an announcement post is released, well, then @Jakob-d can delete this post.)

I'm guessing the Prusa Connect features will work via ethernet only as of right now, correct? No mention of wi-fi support yet - they look great though, maybe not as fancy as let's say octoprint, bud good enough for those like me that only want some basic information and control.

Yeah, no wifi yet. PrusaConnect is very early right now. You can't upload models or select from a list of models on a USB yet, for example. Furthermore, it advertises that this is "PrusaConnect Local," which strongly implies that in the future, you could link your Prusa Mini to an online interface that is accessible anywhere (full "PrusaConnect"). It's early days, but it's still neat stuff. I'm also thankful for some of the minor bug fixes, such as the head will no longer occasionally crash on the Y-axis when stopping the print, stuff like that.

yeah, all the other fixes sound great too - thing is I don't have my mini (yet!) so I can't really tell how needed they were.

I'm wondering if in the future prusa connect not-local will support a webcam through the usb ports - I remember there's still a free thread on the board's processor. That'd be neat!

@Matteo-cristini

If you look at the launch announcement:

This time, we’re using our own custom-made 32-bit mainboard called Buddy. It’s based on an ARM STM32F407chipset, it features RTOS (Real-Time OS), silent Trinamic 2209 drivers, ethernet port, ESP support (for the optional Wi-Fi module) and it will support our farm management software natively in the future. It allows us to run things in parallel – one thread is reserved for Marlin 2 (motion planning), the second thread is for LCD GUI and the third one is for networking. Basically, everything you can achieve with OctoPrint can be done on this mainboard as well – even a camera connection (although it runs at 1 fps)! Not every feature will be available in the launch firmware, but we will keep improving the printer through new firmware after launch.

Bolded area by myself. So, they've experimented with it. It's not fast, but it could absolutely work.

UPDATE: Also, from the STM32F407 overview sheet:

Rich connectivity: Superior and innovative peripherals: Compared to the STM32F4x5 series, the STM32F407/417 product lines feature Ethernet MAC10/100 with IEEE 1588 v2 support and a 8- to 14-bit parallel camera interface to connect a CMOS camera sensor.

I don't see an easy unpopulated camera connector on the Buddy board though.

Maybe they can use one of the two available usb ports - not sure though

From the Prusa Mini BOM thread:

No open headers visible. (The open one in the photo is for the display.) It would have to be over the USB OTG port, because the standard USB port is mainly used for storage. The chip itself has very little storage (as is common with embedded devices, the whole firmware package is under 1MB in size), and certainly doesn't have enough storage for models. I am very sure nobody wants to connect the webcam at the cost of losing the ability to store any models, so I would firmly expect that if it is possible, it would need to be over the OTG port (which is the small, microUSB port currently used for OctoPrint.)

yes, yes - I meant the micro usb port, I get it there are no free headers on the board 🤣 😀

RE: New RC: 4.0.5-RC1

Anyone know when this is likely to be on 'General Release' ??

Being a newbie i think i would prefere the final version, although i am keen on getting the 'under extrusion' correction as i have noticed the under extrusion in comparison with when i was running 4.0.3

Thanks

S

@Steve-4

I would assume a few days. We had a 4.0.3-RC1 (I believe), and that's about how long it took.

This is looking awesome!  I can't wait for the wifi option to be enabled. (I bought a wifi chip and installed it when I first assembled the printer)

And I love the simple change to orange for the highlighted selection on the user interface.  Way better.

@frankincell Can't wait for Wifi either!

I'm not exactly a fan of the change to Orange though, mainly because the UI is now inconsistent with some highlighted areas being white (such as the home screen, file selection menu) and others being orange.

@g-j-sieben

Maybe we could ask them to implement “themes” so we can have some control over the colors.
