MINI+ under extrusion and filament jams

This is my first printer, so I assume the problem has something to do with me, but I'm trying to work through getting my printer to consistantly print without failing.

At first printing was going perfectly, I printed a nut, a screw, a few articulating sharks and then I swapped filament to a Sunlu roll...not impressed. ever since then I've had nothing but issues. I was never able to successfully print with the Sunlu, as it always under extruded. So I started adjusting the feed, then the hotend temperature, then the print speed; at best I ended up with weak prints that were sparse. I finally gave up on that filament and swapped back to the Prusa filament I got with the printer and had a successful print right away, then multiple failures from under extrusion.

I finally pulled the extruder because of a jam that wouldn't unload, turned out there was a lump in the filament just past the brass fitting on the hotend side. I cleared the issue and cleaned out the extruder. Everything was going well for another 10 hours of printing, then more under extrusions, or filament breaks in the extruder. Pulled it apart again, cleaned again, did a series of cold pulls, cleared the nozzle with the provided needle. One good print, then back to print failures. At this point I have the hotend torn down and am going to clean and re-assemble, but kind of frustrated especially with others saying how their's just works and works and works without issue.

Any ideas?

I had the exact same process when I got my mini+, in the end I bought the bondtech extruder and heatbreak which solved those issues, the default extruder that comes with the mini is just sub par. At times I wish I hadn't bought the mini+, especially with them locking the firmware down the way they have. Next machine will be self built.

Did you try loosening the idler screw on the extruder? Make sure it’s not too tight.

Yes, I worked through about 4 rotations of loosening, half a rotation at a time. It had no noticeable effect on print quality. I ended up resetting the tensioner screw to be flush with the body as indicated because it didn't seem to help or hurt.

My desire is not to upgrade everything, otherwise I may as well have purchased the full size model which most folks seem to love.

@dreww

What i am testing with mine is the retraction... maybe set the value lower and the speed lower... may be a possibility.

Prusa Mini+ since 4. March 2021, with e3d v6 all metal hotend.
Printing mostly useful stuff and toys for the kids.
