Just Ordered My Mini -- What Should I Do to Prep?

...besides order some additional Prusament?

Any recommended tools, supplies, or other items I might need?

So far, my shopping list is:

  • Isopropyl Alcohol
  • Super Lube
  • Concrete paver and rubber mat
  • Raspberry Pi 3B+ and RPi Camera for Octoprint purposes
  • Ball end hex driver set, metric

Many thanks in advance!

Be Careful with Ball End Hex Drives, in Grub screws, like on the extruder heatbreak, X and Y toothe Motor Pulleys and the Bondtech gear

Ball end drivers tend to break the walls of the hex cup, in the grub screw!

I've just received my Mini, and one thing I forgot was that a large number of the things I had bookmarked ready to print needed nuts and bolts to hold bits together, so these are on hold until I order a small stock of fixings!

This thread https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/english-forum-general-discussion-announcements-and-releases/tools-what-do-you-recommend/ may give you some ideas on tools etc.

@joantabb

Thank you, Joan.  I had read that the ball end drivers were helpful, but perhaps this was on the I3 MK3S kit.  Perhaps I'll just stick with the supplied tools.

-Wire cutting pliers to remove supports from your print. I would also advise on wearing safety classes when removing some of the more stubborn supports.

- caliper to check the dimensions of functional prints

- gloves to keep your steel sheets clean

- tools for nozzle changes, you can read up on it here: https://help.prusa3d.com/en/article/changing-or-replacing-the-nozzle_2069#procedure

- Silica gel, a humidity sensor and a large box to store your open filament spools

Optional stuff:

- sanding paper

- scalpel, really nice for removing smaller zits and brim remains

- Any good multi purpose glue

- square nuts, screws, small magnets, bearings. Depending on what you want to print.

I'm pretty sure you can use any WebCam for Octoprint. I run it in an Ubuntu lxc container instead of a RPi, and it works great. Also, the MINI doesn't come with enough Haribo gummy bears IMHO - I recommend more for assembly ;-).

Allocate about three times the space you think you need, for the extra printers that you don't think you need at the moment...

3D printing is contageous, and expansive!

Best wishes, Joan

This plier set has been handy https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07QL3CLRS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Having a tall sturdy workbench has been outstanding   https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-6-ft-Adjustable-Height-Solid-Wood-Top-Workbench-G7200S-US/206288247

And I've got to order a couple more of these lights for my OMW Minis.  https://www.homedepot.com/p/Lavish-Home-41-in-Black-Modern-Contemporary-LED-Clamp-Desk-Lamp-72-L092-B/205488532

This reamer has come in handy a few times  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0895QXHNT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

8x3 magnets (100 minimum)

608 Bearings (40-50 to stock the shelves)

Superglue

Paper Towels (Quarantine levels are SOP for Makers)

I also recommend one of those garbage cans that open with a foot pedal.  There is a constant stream of tiny plastic shrapnel to throw away.

I use the Costco window cleaner that comes in a big spray can.  It's quick and easy, and I save the isopropyl because it's harder to come by lately.

If you're designing your own things, then 8" calipers and an 18" metal ruler come in very handy!

Where are you storing all your filament?  I'm using bookshelves with speedbumps I printed along the front.

I'm sure there's more lol

For lube Prusa suggest litium grease for smooth rod, do not lube the lead screw rod, it can maintenance itself. It have plastic part lube lead the screw may damage the plastic part.

Add brass brush for nozzle cleaning to your list. You may find brushes with wooden handle to be more environmental friendly 🙂 And buy in bulk, those things are not forever. You may buy the isopropyl alcohol in glass in 1L volume or bigger, we produce enough of plastic already 😉
