How to Remove Negative Volume from STL 3D Model File?

I'd like to think I'm somewhat tech savvy and am really new to 3D printing but I'm apparently stumped on something I thought should be fairly easy to resolve.   I downloaded a model off of printables.com called Swing Name Tag.  When I open up the STL file in PrusaSlicer v2.7.1, I see that the top and bottom of the name tag has negative volumes of text.  I would like to replace the demo text with something more meaningful to me.  My problem is I don't seem to be able to remove said negative volume text.

I've tried to explore around the PrusaSlicer menu as well as googling around for a solution to my problem, but it seems that the Text Editor in PrusaSlicer (or the ability to edit negative volumes) is only AFTER text or a negative volume are added to the model.  In other words, if the text / negative volume were already present in the STL, then there does not appear to be a way for me to remove or fill the text using PrusaSlicer.

Is this a limitation of PrusaSlicer whereby I need to download a CAD program to tweak the model in the STL file?

RE:

Hi Darth,

the models on Thingiverse, have text embedded in the body of the model, it's not negative volumes, So you can't edit or remove the text.

I Loaded the STEP File into my 3d design program,

Noted that is was 3mm thick

so I generated a 3mm thick slab, big enough to fill all the letters and numbers
and merged that into the spinner section of the name plate.

this resulted in a BLANK Key spinner.

Then I imported the blank spinner into Prusa slicer,
used the text tool, to add my name, and set it to cut the text out, 1mm deep.

then I used height modifiers to make the top couple of layers, have a single perimeter, to make the label look prettier

I have saved the file, as a project file,
and I attach it below,

Modified Name Tag

you can edit the text modifier and select your preferred printer then use the file yourself

If you wish, you can do colourchange by layer height, and change the face colour too

Joan,

Many thanks!  Do you have a 3D design program you'd recommend (preferably free)?

RE: How to Remove Negative Volume from STL 3D Model File?

Hi Darth

I use a defunct 3d package 123Ddesign.
there are a number of 3D packages...    FreeCad is free...    Fusion360 has a limited function home user  option.  that is free.
Tinkercad is another free package and there are more.

I believe the reality is whichever package you find easiest to start working, in, is the best...

I have a fusion license, but I find it complex... and I tend to fall back on 123Ddesign because  I can do most things I need Quickly. in it...

give a couple, a go, see if any catch your interest...

the various     xxxCAD programs, tend to be best for functional  objects,
Other programs are better for organic objects,
what sort of of thing are you wanting to model?  that may lead you to one form of 3D design, or another

regards Joan
