Regarding the Nozzle it was said by Joseph Prusa that the nozzle factory fitted to the Mini isnt a e3d nozzle but they (e3d nozzles) are compatible with the Mini

I finally got time to watch the videos and agree JP said the buddy board will not be used to upgrade the MK3(s) and that different boards would be potentially manufactured for each printer family. He also stated that the mini is not really upgrade-able.

So why make this board with all the extra unused connectivity if it is not going to be used for other printers / devices?.

It may just be that the original intention was for this to be the case, but it was also mentioned that it is not expensive to make new board designs, so maybe this could be the reason for saying this board is not intended as an upgrade to existing printer families.

I'm sure it could still be used for new accessories like potentially a new mmu or something else else though.

I'm sure if this board is cheap enough to buy it could also be used by the general maker community as a general purpose control board with built in stepper controller for a variety of different projects, just depends how much IO is exposed from the processor for general use, but all speculation and guess work until we see the real thing and get to analyse it.

Tungsten Carbide nozzle anybody?. E3d stated they have no plans on making one!.

Why would you need a nozzle with that kind of strength/hardness? Wouldn’t it be overkill and expensive?

Had no idea these were coming, but saw two of them in the Prusa booth at the East Coast RepRap festival (ERRF) in Belair, Maryland last weekend. Almost tore my pocket ripping out my checkbook only to find they were only demo units and they had not brought any for sale. BIG BUMMER! The cantilevered X axis scares me a little from a rigidity standpoint, but I'll trust that they did their engineering homework on it. Word in the booth (directly from J.P.s mouth) was that pre-orders were already over 1300 units. Tried to place an order then and there but ran into problems using a mobile phone.  Rushed home and did the deed so I'm at least in the queue. Build volume is not much smaller than my two MK3s, but overall smaller footprint and weight are a win. Probably 90+% of my prints will fit this table. If it will do flex reliably, I may get a farm going. Happy camper I am.

At the temps the Mini is officially rated at, it's of questionable value. Using one certainly won't hurt anything but there's not need to spend that much for typical materials.

Aren't they? The hotend assembly (heatsink, heatbreak and heat block) are not normal E3D, but they specifically mentioned "E3D compatible nozzles". I can't imagine it's more economical to manufacture their own, but perhaps so.

Maybe some more smaller sizes?. E3d produce 0.15, 0.25, 0.3, 0.35, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6 and 0.8mm

Maybe PRUSA want 0.1 and 0.2 mm nozzles as well, although I wonder if 0.1 would even be possible to print with using a bowden setup.

And yes,agreed, a TC nozzle would be overkill for the mini and probably not needed, but maybe not so for a core XY.

I tried to look up the numbers from the x axis motor from a close up in one of the videos, but returned a blank, they do not start with LDO like the previous 1.8 Deg motors on the existing printers, so at this time I have no idea whether they are still 1.8 or maybe 0.9 motors, the old Einsy Rambo board struggles with very fine micro stepping values as it simply did not have the oomph, whereas this board should be OK, so in theory you should be able to get a much finer step movement with this 32 bit board.

Now add an airbrush nozzle : https://hackaday.com/2018/10/01/high-detail-3d-printing-with-an-airbrush-nozzle/

with possibly much finer movement, and you have a winning combination for very detailed prints, ideal for RPG character prints etc.

I did think that because of the bevels on the heater block and a few additional comments made by JP that coupled with this nozzle non planar prints may have been possible, but that idea was thrown out of the window due to the PINDA probe!. It's not to say it is not possible, but you would be limited in what you could practically achieve due to the height restriction caused by the probe.

If we do the maths from the quantity of prints 35 in 42 hours for the Mk3 and 40 in 24 hours for two mini's they both come out the same.

35/42 = 0.833

20/24 = 0.833 (20 as the promotional page shows 40 for 2 printers in 24 hrs)

So no faster, but half the price!.

PRUSA may have tested the printer at much higher speeds, but this was to check for vibrations etc due to the single arm design.

Moving less mass would allow using higher accelerations which in turn should render faster prints. 3000 mm/s^2 acceleration was mentioned in some of the videos out there. But that edge might be eaten by the, maybe, slower retracts.

I might be an over analyzation that they are not using E3D nozzles.  The statement may mean that the mini can tall all E3D compatible nozzles.

JP said it in a Q&A video right after the show. dont know where to find anymore, but it was recordet verticaly.

He joked around with the guy from e3d who was sitting there too, and it was clear they use their own noozles, but they are e3d compatible.

So if the speed is equivalent to the mk3/s then the 32-bit board advantage is helping in other ways OR it offsets a slowdown that the mechanical build the Mini introduces?

There are no Mini specific spares on the website at present, so can we be sure that nozzles bought for the mk3/s are OK to use for the Mini ?

I love the idea of a smaller printer to add to my collection.  Has anyone played around with the 0.15 nozzles?  I'm looking forward to this.

On a side note, I'd love to have a Prusa that had a 500x500 or larger bed.

What I see now is:

  • The heather block is shaped different: 
    this means "you will need to buy just the PRUSA one and not a chinese one..." 😉 
  • The Nozzle is different than E3D, probably some lengths are different or the nozzle conic angle may be different:
    this means "you will need to buy just the PRUSA one and not a chinese one..." 😉 
  • The cooling system and heath block are completely originals, no one will produce.
    This means: "you will need to buy just the PRUSA one nobody else has them..." 😉 

That could be a mix of design and marketing strategy, but it will ensure that you will be able to purchase and use ONLY ORIGINAL PRUSA parts replacements, even being open source, since nobody else will produce them (at least for a while). So the "compatible" terms may mean that you need to do some work, changes, and arrangements on the printer, to install a non PRUSA part, and for the majority of people it does not worth the work. They will simple use original PRUSA parts, if their costs will be reasonable.

Regarding the speed, that was an extreme test performed by PRUSA, and it was just possible because the head is bowden and very light, with less mass. JP say also that he expect the head to resist till 300°C even if they will not officially declare it on the final specs, where the operating temperature limit will be taken lower.
