Introducing the LACKlosure: an Enclosure Box for MK4S based on the original PRUSA IKEA Enclosure

For those who think that the Original PRUSA Enclosure is too expansive, or that it is inconvenient to have a box that prevents 360° access to the printer during maintenance, or who do not want to disassemble or modify the printer's bed just to put it into a box, or who are particularly sensitive to filament fumes (as me) and absolutely do not want to breathe them, then this is the project for you.

I become very sensitive to filament fumes, and since I'm do not own a farm and I print as a hobby at home, it was necessary to do something right away to stop the fumes.

I wanted to build the original PRUSA i3 MK3 enclosure based on the IKEA Lack table but soon I realised that it had some flaws, that should be fixed. So I decided to redesign the whole thing applying the required improvements to the original version.

This is how the LACKLOSURE was born. There are many improvements over the original IKEA Enclosure box, and the most significative for me over a common box are:

  • The fume extraction
  • Easy opening with access to 360° at the printer in case of maintenance.
  • No modifications to the bed cable required.

However  you will find all the project details here in Printable. In addition to the plastic parts, there is also a very detailed step-by-step user guide to the assembly so that anyone can realise it (and I think this is the most valuable part).

Best Regards

Very nice, I like the trick with hemisphere for the cable. Great write up. I'll be checking back, if I decide to get MMU for Christmas, I'll need to figure out double-LACK space.

Anyway, isn't it awesome, how many stuff is unwillingly ready for 3d printing? Long time before I got the printer, I knew where I would put it on LACK. Bloom, tons of guides on Lack enclosures. Where do I put my filament? Let's check what IKEA has...Salma 22l looks just about right... Boom, all the mods for Salma boxes 🤣 did I mention circular food dehydrator, which is just right size for spools?

I love the 3d printing space...

I see a major flaw in the writing: you don't specify size of gummy bear pack!

Hello, I have the MMU3 on the other MK3.5S and I still need to build a second Lacklosure for it.

Considering my MMU3 experience, where I need often complete access on the 5 back tubes of the MMU and the motorised filament switcher, I will not absolutely put the unit inside the enclosure: too mess when something goes wrong,  due to the fact that the PTFE tubes have still filament inside when an error occur and so they can not be disconnected, the box can't be fully opened.

Probably I will create the standard hole in the top centre, and I will fit the original MMU3 exit tube there, avoiding to mess with the setting related to the tube length.

In any case I will installed my MMU3 unit externally on the top or on the left and so I will not need any other extra space.

However I am still thinking on what the final setup will be 😉
