Poor Quality Print on First Layer after Supports
Hi all,
I'm having a problem where when I print the part shown, the quality of the 1st layer above the supports is a very poor quality. The print completes successfully and from top down it looks perfect, however when I remove the supports the finish is very poor when looking from bottom up. Does anyone have any ideas about how I could resolve this?
I have checked different printers (Mk4 & XL) and different filaments and always get the same results.
For info the filament I'm using is PLA and I'm printing using a 0.4mm Nozzle.
Thanks

Could you please attach a copy of the project file, including the part in question for us to try and help,
I will be away from my printers in about 4 hours, but hopefully another another forum member can help you if you respond after that.
regards Joan
Please note! you need to ZIP Compress your Project file, and post the compressed zip file, or the forum will quietly drop your file...

Hi Joan,
Thanks for your reply.
Please find attached the gcode and part file, hopefully this is what you meant by project file?
RE: Poor Quality Print on First Layer after Supports
Did you use the standard PrusaSlicer Profile? At least for me, this produces decent prints when using support.
RE: Poor Quality Print on First Layer after Supports
Yes, I used the system presets for all options, that's why I'm surprised at the quality of it.
If it was a custom profile that I had messed up, then I would understand 😀

No, I meant, go to the files drop down menu,
choose Save Project as
then save the prusa slicer session, including all of the settings
after saving the .3mf file, you then need to zip compress the project file and
attach the zipped project file to the next post.
I will try the .STL

RE: Poor Quality Print on First Layer after Supports
Hi, I had a play with the STL
Should have looked at the Gcode. and seen that you printed PLA
anyway
first try, printed in PETG, one normal orientation, one at 90 degrees, using SNUG Supports
outsides different textures because of print orientation
Inside of right piece shows support damage
Bottom of left piece shows support damage
Second try using PLA (Galaxy Purple, hence the sparkles)
Model tilted at 45 degrees, minimal support (I actually painted on some extra support across the lower edges)
Slight deformation on curve in above image, but no support damage
Slight deformation on curve from a different angle below
Painted on supports shown below
The build plate is a holographic smooth build plat from Aliexpress
I Hope this helps.
regards Joan

RE: Poor Quality Print on First Layer after Supports
Frankly, the OP's original photo looks pretty good, in line with what I would expect printing PLA on PLA supports. There's a necessary gap between the top layer of the supports and the first layer of the overhang surface. It there wasn't the model would fuse to the supports. So when the printer lays down that first layer, it will droop a bit, which creates the uneven surface.
You may get better results if if you have an MMU or XL and can print PLA on PETG supports with zero gap.

RE: Poor Quality Print on First Layer after Supports
Hi Joan,
Thanks very much for your help with this.
As Fox says above, I was wondering if this was just the limit of the printer / model combo.
But I didn't consider the option of printing at a 45degree angle (and I didn't know about the paint-on support function). I have re-printed at 45 degrees and I got results similar to you, which are much improved.

sometimes you have to look from different angles...
Organic support may have been better!
