Weird layer shift on long prints

Hi

I got a weird layer shift when long printing. I read several topics on this with possible solutions like:

  • Problem with transfers using Prusa Connect
  • Belt tension
  • Loos screews

I checked my hardware and everything seems fine and correctly fastened and tuned. The offset happens on X as well as on Y axis. What is also weird is that the offset happens at the same layer so I don't suspect the printer hardware to be the problem but the software (slicer and/or firmware).

So I went on and did some test print with different slicer settings. Basically I used the 0.2 structural system settings with Gyroid fill pattern. When I slice using the default pattern (Grid), the print will finish successful.

I was also able to record this on video. One hears a high pitch sound on Z layer move (at about second 5) and it seems the printer looses its Z position the next layer.

I think you mean it loses its Y (and maybe X) position after the noise at 5s...  not Z...

Switching to grid infill is the clue I think.  Check the release notes for firmware 6.2.1 - there is a rare but repeatable issue with gyroid infill and certain shapes.  With your thread pattern that might be the trigger (the initial post I saw was printing large gears).

It's possible (nobody has tried this to my knowledge) that if you change some of the gyroid parameters you might get it to print.  But I would just change to another infill and get the print done.  At least until the firmware issue is finally fixed...

Sure. First layer looks ok to me and the prints sticks well to the plate (satin powder-coated).

Got another picture of another print. This one got an offset in both directions. Left one is the underside.

I have been experiencing the exact same issue for the past two days while trying to print this: Silica Gel Dryer Spool. The instructions specify setting the top and bottom layers to 0 and using the infill as a vent. I am using 35% gyroid infill, and the issue occurs at random points with varying severity, producing the same noise as in your video.

I suppose we'll have to wait for a fix...
