One word of caution / Wichtiger Hinweis

For all who want to implement this upgrade.

The WiFi connector on the mainboard is extremely (!) fragile and can easily be ruined even with very gentle force. To be able to reasonably access this connector calmly and with proper space around your fingers, I strongly suggest you take out the mainboard before connecting the WiFi cable.

This extra work is easily justified if you take into consideration that the connector cannot be repaired, if you break it, you have to buy a new mainboard!

This also applies to all, who want to build a 4S from scratch by themselves.

Der Hinweis ist auch relevant für alle, die einen 4S von Grund auf selbst bauen wollen.

Lucky you... I broke it, and I have 30 yrs of experience with this stuff. These connectors are made for industry robots (or tiny asian female hands). And putting it on while the PCB is in the box is error prone, hence my warning...

Which step of the build are you actually referring to?

Maybe I'm looking at the wrong thing?! lol

Step 9 of course, connecting the NFC antenna. The box is tightly crammed with cables and stuff that there is almost no room for an ordinary sized index finger to move around freely.

And if you manage to get your index finger in, you can no longer see the tiny little surface mount (!) coax connector, which btw. you should view from the side - because only then will you be able to judge whether or not you are perfectly perpendicular to the PCB, which is an absolute must before applying even the tiniest amount of insertion force... 🙁

I hear that, I started when discrete resistor-transistor based circuits were the thing, a long while ago. Electronics keep getting smaller, but that's why something like an MK4S can fit on a bench-top.  This post has a link to a video clip that I found useful to seat that kind of connector.

Ah so you are referring to the NFC connector - not the actual wireless connector (which is completely separate).

Again, I had no issues, as you will see from my video guide. You do need to be very careful but as long as you seat it straight it doesn't go in very hard IMO.

Upsa, you're right. No idea why I wrote WiFi. Maybe because this sort of surface mount coax connector is frequently used (and also in a Fritzbox which I cleaned up years ago) for internal WiFi antennae (Fritzboxes have several in addition to the one on the main PCB, to address different spacial directions).

The WiFi antenna doesn't even have a connector, it's a PCB antenna directly on a daughterboard. Yes, I am talking about the NFC connector. But I'm afraid I cannot correct my posting, merely amend it 🙁

Yes. But it would be much safer to walk the extra mile and remove the board before attaching the cable and do this calmly while the board is sitting on your desk in front of. Then you have all the space you need and you can look at the board sideways. Which is the only (!) way you can really check yourself that you exert absolutely perpendicular force.

What's an extra hour compared to the necessity to purchase an entire new mainboard?
