Multi Material Printing

I'm trying to print a part that is a lot like the original mk4 LCD holder. I'd like to print letters/shapes on the bed side and change material mid way thru the first layer.

I've tried to separate the parts into 2 prints but the auto bed leveling causes the 2nd print layer 1 to be too tall.

I've also tried printer settings > multiple extruders and assigning different colors to the parts. I've clicked the "single extruder multi material" option both ways with the same result.

It shows up fine on the printer but when I hit print, the LCD goes mostly black then the bed heats to temp. The nozzle does not and it freezes.

I also keep getting an error when trying to upload the gcode/STL/.3mf. How do I do that?

I've had the same result with multiple parts. 2 independent computers and 2 different MK4s.

RE: Multi Material Printing

Somewhere here it was written about the impossibility of multi-material printing from a USB key when the printer falls and freezes. It should be able to print via PrusaLink or PrusaConnect. Try to see where it is described here. Files attached to posts must be packed in *.zip. Unfortunately, the system of this forum is quite "antediluvian" not only in this, but also in the user settings and the admins do not want to do anything with it.

I should have added I did try and print thru PrusaConnect. But I added the file to the storage to print it. I didn't realize you could print without a memory stick in the printer?

A USB key must be inserted in the printer, otherwise it will not work! Printing via PrusaLink or PrusaConnect bypasses an error in the printer's FW that causes a freeze when printing is started from the printer's menu..

Printing by using Prusalink or PrusaConnect seems to have solved the issue. The same code will begin to print and does not freeze the screen like when started manually.

The printer doesn't prompt a tool change from extruder 1 to extruder 2. I just pauses and keeps printing. Is there a way to prompt this when creating the gcode in the slicer?

RE: Multi Material Printing

are you trying to do manual colour change?

have you added M600 in Custom gcode> tool change gcode?

Yes I'm trying to do a color change.

I've added M600 to see if that works.

you will probably get an unexpected colour change in the initial purge line...

I placed the M600 right after the T1 command line. This was between the color change. It paused the print and prompted correctly.

I also added a small square next to the main model for the new material to print a few lines before going back to the main print. Worked perfectly.

Thanks for everyones help.
