Layer direction.....

Is there a way to change the direction each layer is printed?

I noticed with the sample keychain file that came with the MK4 USB, the layers are printed from side to side, ie. horizontally.

I re-sliced the file to test my printer after updating the firmware to include Input Shaper, and note the direction has changed back to the standard diagonal layers.

Just curious to know if there is a setting to change layer direction that I've missed?

Ah just found it in Expert Mode :

Infill > Advanced > Fill Angle

Currently set to 45 degrees.

Has anyone changed there's? If so, I assume there is no added advantage other than cosmetic?

RE: Layer direction.....

It depends on what you're printing. For certain geometries, you want to avoid situations where the infill lines are very close to straight lines, but not quite -- that will create a very shallow angle between the infill and the perimeter, leaving long gaps in the infill pattern. This gets mostly filled in with the cross-pattern, but it's not a structurally sound (or visually pleasing) situation.

There's also the aesthetic aspect that you mentioned. I've got a project of my own that has extensive use of infill control, to the point of using .stl modifiers to set infill/ironing settings within the same layer for a very specific effect (dual-extruded filament behaves in wonderfully unique ways with regards to this).

Also keep in mind that certain infill methods will behave differently in regards to the infill angle, specifically "Aligned Rectilinear", which will use the same angle for all solid layers instead of alternating by 90 degrees every other layer.
