Y axis loud groan on long slow moves
After upgrading my mk3s+ initially there was no issue, but now after a week or so of printing the y axis is very loud on long slow moves.
There no noise on diagonal moves (x and y moving), or on fast y moves
You can see it here at around 5 seconds. I redid my y-axis tensioning from scratch and the noise still occurs. Is this just normal resonate noise?
RE: Y axis loud groan on long slow moves
I tried essentially rebuilding my y-axis, redoing the u-bolts and retightening the y rod holders, and it is still occurring. does anyone know what this could be?
RE: Y axis loud groan on long slow moves
In my opinion this noise comes from the bearings. It isn`t an broken bearing but it seems to come from the little balls inside of the bearing. I change and regreased my bearings and after that, it is better for me. However, I am not sure if it is really the solution to the problem.
RE: Y axis loud groan on long slow moves
Sometimes people overtighten the ubolts and damage the bearings which makes the balls struggle to recycle, this can cause the balls to skid instead of roll
leading to damage on the smooth rods.

Thanks Cloud and Joan for replying!
I don't see any damage on the rods, and my u-bolts were quite loose, I'll order some new bearings and see if that helps! If that fails I guess its new yrods next
RE: Y axis loud groan on long slow moves
With your noises, the bearings are often the first to be assumed. Unfortunately, the original bearings from Prusa are often defective to bad. And apparently Prusa's own mechanics also install the bearings incorrectly or grease them far too little. It is also important not to put too much grease in the bearings but also not too little. Despite new bearings with me I have the same noise as you also sometimes still. I suspect that the printer now and then sets the Z-offset too low. And in your video you can clearly hear that his noise is also heard on X, just quieter.
greetings Cloud
RE: Y axis loud groan on long slow moves
I think that your suspicions about the bearings are justified. Time ago Prusa stopped installing Misumi bearings on their printers (or selling them as spares ), They use now a nameless brand that costs 2€ at Prusa shop, while Misumis were priced at 8€ each.
Not saying that the current bearings must be crappy, but if they cost 4 times less than the Misumis, it makes you wonder..
RE: Y axis loud groan on long slow moves
About the thing with the bearings, seems to be something in any case. I have also discovered with my bearings that they have no marking of the manufacturer. I also strongly suspect here that they now use cheap China bearings. Presumably it seems to be so still cheaper for Prusa even if you have to send several customers subsequently new bearings.
RE: Y axis loud groan on long slow moves
Also having this problem. Only groans/grinds on slow back-to-front moves. Sounds fine on fast moves.
Will give the bearings on the Y axis a hard look.
RE:
For the record I have replaced the bearings and it still occurs, on to the y rods
RE: Y axis loud groan on long slow moves
Are the A brand bearings a drop-in replacement? If so it might be worth replacing them, they are a critical component and it's worth spending the extra money on.
RE: Y axis loud groan on long slow moves
I have the Problem with the X Axis.
Support doesn‘t help. Says it is normal. I think that is it not a normal Noise. Anyone here with same issue?

RE: Y axis loud groan on long slow moves
@intveltr When you say A brand, are you referring to Misumi, or others? Googling "A brand" is not very productive
RE: Y axis loud groan on long slow moves
Mine does the exact same thing, I'm wondering what the issue is, because it's so loud and in the room I sleep in. Sometimes it's hard to fall asleep with a print going.

Replaced the Yrods, and no dice.
I'm very frustrated by this at this point, its loud enough it makes me not want to run the printer when I'm home or at night. Guess I'll try these bearing and see if it works

RE: Y axis loud groan on long slow moves
I had a similar issue. First prints were fine, no loudness at all, then after approx. 3 weeks loud sound on specific y-axis movements (clearly in the middle). Asked support, they said I shall regrease and it became a lot less loud. However after two weeks, again same loudness. This time, regreasing didn't help. Decided to inspect the bearings as I highly assumed the issue is caused by the right single y-axis bearing, although I couldn't clearly determine it regarding vibrations or sound. So I used a new misumi bearing I had left over, completely regreased it and replaced the right single bearing that came with the prusa printer. Inspected the old bearing and it turned out the balls were still greased but clearly didn't move as clean as they should move (probably worn out balls). Now with the bearing replacement it's even much quieter than before.
RE: Y axis loud groan on long slow moves
I still had loud movements on small steps. So I slightly held the pulley while moving the bed and the noise became much lower. So I decided not to use the prusa app for tensioning with 90 hz but instead tension is more and now the noise almost is gone. Could be still a pulley or the motor, not 100% sure yet.
RE: Y axis loud groan on long slow moves
Just to be clear, that link generates the correct specs for the Y axis bearings? We just order 3x of those and done, no other parameters we need to enter?

This is what I ended up actually ordering, shipping took a while so I still have not installed

Hi
I'm having exactly the same issue as yours. Any updates on the matter? Thanks
