Z axis failing self test

After assembly I've had issues getting the Z-axis to work properly. Initially it was binding very heavily, and I was unable to get it to move much up or down. I rechecked the centering on the sides until it was balanced in the center, but I notice the right spiral rod of the servo moving when the z-axis is going up and down. There's also a VERY high pitch squeal that happens when going up and down, usually more on the lower end. With the spiral rods disconnect (trapezoidal screws removed) the x-axis carriage slides very easily along the z-axis rods.

I have a feeling I'm either doing the centering incorrectly or one or both of the spiral rods are bent. How do I know where the hot end should sit on the x-axis when aligning the servo spiral rods? How can I check if the servo spiral rods are bent? With the smooth rods I would just roll them on a table to be sure, but I'm not sure how to check the spirals.

Here's how to check if the servo spiral rods are bent:

  • Visual Inspection
  • Rolling on a Flat Surface
  • Using a Straightedge
  • Using a Dial Indicator

If you determine that the servo spiral rods are bent, you will need to replace them with new ones. Bent rods can cause binding, noise, and premature wear of other components in the Z-axis assembly.
