What has gone wrong? Quality gone to heck after 4 days

4 days ago the Mk4 came in, less than 20 mn after it arrived the machine was printing. Basically went full send and everything has come out great. Printed this planter for my wife which took about 30 hours - no issues. After a few more different jobs I swapped the default 0.4mm nozzle out for a 0.8mm and printed a benchy at 0.55mm layer height. Came out good, not perfect, but good. But after another day, things have totally gone to heck. I wasn't sure if it was the models or something else so I printed a new benchy tonight and it's absolute trash.

Photo Album

  • Left - Prusament Recycled PETG. 0.4n printed at 0.2mm.
  • Middle - Prusament PLA. 0.8n printed at 0.55mm.
  • Right - Prusament Recycled PETG. 0.8n printed at 0.4mm.

First and last is the same BRAND NEW Recycled PETG just a few days apart.

ok, so I'll admit I thought that was a silly suggestion but I tried it. I switched to Prusament PLA Galaxy Black and printed with the same layer size as the previous. The results speak for themself, worked just fine.

So the question is... does recycled Prusament suck? It printed fine for 2 days then... went to shit? I'm maybe 100grams into a 2kg roll.

Left to right

  • #1 - Prusament Recycled PETG. 0.4n printed at 0.2mm.
  • #2 - Prusament PLA. 0.8n printed at 0.55mm.
  • #3 - Prusament Recycled PETG. 0.8n printed at 0.4mm.
  • #4 - Prusament PLA. 0.8n printed at 0.4mm

I don't think it's because of the Recycled petg.

After all, Boat #1 looks fine.

But as soon as you change to the .8 nozzle it goes wrong.

So it could be that the .8 nozzle is flawed.

What you also can try is drying the filament.

Agree with this - I think its something to do with the 0.8 nozzle....

Dry your filaments; plenty of threads on here.

Nope. It's the increased light so you can make out any details. In my last set of pictures posted you can see galaxy black in the #4 slot. I got them right because Galaxy black PLA is on a 1kg spool and the PETG is on a 2kg Spool.

Cheerio,

I understand filament drying. But this is brand new, just unsealed direct from Prusa HQ 4 days ago. Also it printed perfectly 3 days ago, I've never heard of filament that expires that quickly. Is that a thing? Filament good for only 48 hours, like the oldFlexplay DVD's?

All but #1 were printed on the .8n, so #2 and #4 in the PLA came out just fine. Though I think I'm going to try swapping back and seeing if its maybe some combination of the .8 AND the PETG together.  I also Amazon'd an OVERTURE PETG (which had decent reviews) to see if that prints better/worse as well.

And to those that suggested it, if it turns out that yes, the first 100g of the PETG was fine and now it's not - I will contact Prusa support. Thank you for all your suggestions!

In a humid atmosphere PETG can absorb enough moisture to degrade print quality in a day.  Long prints can start out clean and be stringing before they finish.

Dry it before taking any other steps.
