Rattling on Sub 20min Benchy video
Hi,
I didn't know where to ask this, but since I consider it as troubleshooting, I put it here.
I am the only one who was impressed by the Sub 20m Benchy video, expect by the rattling noise when bed was moving?
Is it a normal noise? I never had it on my Prusa MK3s, and I'm a little concerned about it.
I know it's a demo from preproduction printer, but I was wondering if it will be a normal condition for the futur printers.

I can't answer your question directly. I don't have an MK4. Not sure if anyone does yet?
What I can say is that if judging from the video is any consideration, that is printing like 4x faster than my MINI+ and sounds like it's way quieter at the same time. So whatever that noise is (I noticed it when I watched the video), it certainly doesn't appear it'll bother me once I purchase an MK4 myself to replace my MINI+.

If you print fast, you will always have a different noice. That rattling i know from my Voron, not from my Prusa at standard, but when i tried to push the Prusa to the limit and sometimes also over the limit i heard the same. So i think you will get this sound only at high speed printing, but that ist only an suppostion.

i also had a rattling sound when pushing acceleration a bit harder.
turns out the linear ball bearings of the bed allowed a tiny bit of vertical movement, like the bearing needed some radial pretension to work precisely. and yes, the bearings were already attached firmly to the bed, the tiny movement was between the bearing itself and the rod.
i eventually replaced them with plastic slide bearings and its been way better since i was able to preload them more precisely so the vertical movement is gone while not fearing rod scratches from deformed ball bearings. way quieter now and one thing less to grease too.
but it is a fine line between tight bearings and wrongly detected collissions, but that might be no longer a risk if the load cell is now used to detect those.

So I have a gcode for a sub 20 benchy that I tested on my MK3 years ago and I just loaded it up and while its not as quite as the MK4 there is still a bit of a Rattle.

Never had a MK3 that didn't rattle. MK4 has the same bearings and rods on the y axis. Means the rattle will presists.
After upgrading the y axis to HIWIN linear rails, all my MK3's are completely silent.

I’ve wanted to do this on both my mk2 and my mk3s (adding linear rails). But I have seen videos showing it decreased print quality by showing more artifacts on the perimeters. Did you see a decrease in quality or an improvement ? I wish the machines came with the rails instead of rods.

You're referring to the video Thomas Sanladerer did about the rails? He used power tools, said it doesn't slide smoothly and startet printing. He's a fun guy, but more on the entertaining than scientific side. It takes a little bit of work and knowledge to align linear rails properly. I recommend a small 0.6Nm torque adapter for proper and even screw tightening.
The linear rails eliminated the play completely. I compared test prints and didn't recognize any kind of difference in surface quality. Ratteling is gone, first layer is more consistent and I was able to increase the print speed a little bit without decrease in print quality. If your only goal is an improvement in surface quality, it's not worth the price. If you still want it, be aware that there are many chinese HIWIN fakes out there. And you need to modify your firmware to avoid calibration errors and print head collision.

My mk3s+ does make a similar noise from the bed moving back and forth. It got better over time but I still can hear it sometimes depending on the print.
It seems like it's something with the bearings and or heated bed carriage? I think I've heard people making it better with some different bearing mounts but I never felt like taking it apart to try.

That rattle originates from the y-carriage bearings. The MK4 uses the same 'bad' bearing attachment method like the MK3s+.
I have the 'had' the exact same noise from my MK3s+ in silent mode.
I'm really annoyed by the support and the prusa channel, because they do not acknowledge the issue and alot of people have issues with the rattling bed.
I finally fixed mine after months of troubleshooting, there are alot of 'fixes' but they mostly consists of buying stuff and spending alot of money.

The fix would have been using genuine misumi rods (G6) with their bearings.
In my eyes using 3 small bearings is also a bad practise. I would've opted for 2 normal LMU8 bearings on the left side (like now) and one misumi LMUW8 on the right side, insead of the small one.
Funny thing is, it's impossible to use the longer one, because of the carriage cutout.
MK3s+ printers rattle alot more, because the bearings are not getting compressed enough by the metal "clamps".
The U-bolts were better, because they compressed the bearings alot more, but if too tight, they would've caused damage to the rods.
So, get yourself a bearing holder that compresses the bearings a bit, swap the rods to misumi G6 ones with new bearings, switch to linear rails or leave it as is.

Are there any maintenance free bearings, or higher quality bearings available, that could be used on the MK4? I believe most of the rods are the same as the predecessor anyways other then the Z-axis - if better quality bearings are around I'd rater install them as part of the build?
Maybe its best to keep everything completely stock, but I know I wouldn't want to take everything apart to upgrade bearings later......

Wasn't the change away from Misumi bearings a deliberate one? I am no expert but wasn't the argument about binding?

I tried a bunch of options for the y-axis. Different bearing clamps, and vesconite bushings. I eventually settled on mgn12 rails. They are very good.

Mine don’t do any noise like that even if I crank the speed up (I tried 999% when printing). So maybe it’s the new bearings they are selling that replace Misumi ones?
I might order Misumi one before getting my MK4 kit…
