RE: MK4 PLA Stringing

Printing a temperature tower, I still get microscopic stringing on every temp, but it lessens around ~190°. This is without ramping.

I went all the way down to 170° and it printed, but still a tiny bit of stringing. When the extruder does the bed level check, and it sits at 170°, I get oozing, which I didn't prior to the MK4 upgrade. Every time it touches the bed for leveling it leaves a tiny dot on the print bed. Which would make sense if the temperature was really something like 190° instead of 170° when it's doing its thing...

The temp tower failed at 160°, but even at 165° I still had super fine whispy strings.

RE: MK4 PLA Stringing

I have had the exact same problem as everyone else in this thread since day one. The way customer support seems to be acting regarding the issue is starting to get me suspicious. This is possibly a design flaw with the Mk4 that only effects some printers. Since in my case Prusa seems to haven no idea as to the cause I'm getting ready to return the printer as I've wasted countless hours already trying the troubleshoot it. This is unacceptable for a premium product, especially with such a saturated market now.

Well this is playing to my theory that something on the route from thermistor to mainboard is adding resistence to reading. Cold solder joint or something else. Thermistor could be fine but this could potentialy hassle readings.

I will try to check full route over the weekend with multimeter.

Well this is really bad. I have built kit version so returning is not a option. Hopefully they will find solution to this problem.

Hi all,

same problem with a new factory assembled MK4. Same print, same roll of filament : no stringing at all with my mk3s, horrible stringing with my mk4. Checking the thermistor, values are ok (between 150-210), so the pb is elsewhere. I will go to chat this WE

Mine is a kit too. You can return it, but chances are you might have to eat the return shipping cost.

blue or black wire thermistor... some people say blue one is the correct one. But mine is a blue one and I have the issue.  The problem is probably more complex...

Iam actually few kms from Prague so there is no problem for me to drive my ass to prusa to return printer. But based on my multiple experiences with prusa i still believe that they will solve the issue. Actually i just have talked with support and they told me that they have new thermistor that should be solving this issue. They sent me one so i will test it when it arrives. Also i will still try to check full thermistor route over the weekend so we have mor data about this problem.

Exactly, after my discussion with the service team it was no issue to return the kit, which was built up. It just took a couple weeks until they refunded the money.

RE:

I hope that fixes it for you. In my case, before I contacted support I did test the thermistor via a thermalcouple and it was reading as it should. Even during one long support session the support agent made me test the resistance value of the sensor and it was within spec. Recently I contacted support for an update on the situation as I haven't heard from them in a while and they immediately jumped the gun on a thermistor being bad. I tried to explain to them that it was already tested. No matter what I said meant nothing; semi-forced they sent me one 🤡 . So yeah in my case I'm done. Once I get it, I'll install it regardless and run a test print. When it enviably changes nothing, I'll start return process. I'm so done.

RE: MK4 PLA Stringing

Thank you for info. Iam little bit calmer to know that there is still this option. I will take my chance with new thermistor for now and we will see. Support seem to be pretty confident with this solution so i will make some update next week when it arrives. Hopefully this will not come to me returning printer. If I overlook this issue it is really great machine and if it is same workhorse as MK3s then i want to have it.

Please update here after you installed the new thermistor. I wanted to order a new one myself to see if this makes a difference.

RE:

I will definetly update after i test new thermistor. I would suggest to wait with buing new one becouse last week i bought new thermistor and what came was black wired one same as the one i had problem with. So i had also problems with new one.

Today support told me they have new one that should solve the issue so maybe there is V3 thermistor? Idk but i too am little skeptikal.

Well… I am in the same boat. Had contact with chat support at monday. Waiting for a reply via mail since then. Printed a stringing test. Top is 180. Even at 195 it‘s cooking the filament

RE: MK4 PLA Stringing

I've been getting the same wispy stringing with every filament I've tried since building my MK4 kit months ago.  Jan, did you ever try that triangle labs thermistor, if so did it help the issue?

It's probably a 100k NTC interchangeable thermistor.  I use these at work, and about the best one you can get without spending a fortune is the YSI 44011, which is now made by Measurement Specialties / TE Connectivity:

I'm tempted to try ordering one to see if it works.

One problem is the calibration table stops at 150 C, where we're all operating higher.

I got an email from support today saying that they are sending me an XL thermistor and that should fix the issue. I'll report back once I get in installed and tested.

RE: MK4 PLA Stringing

I have ordered trianglelab thermistor and heater but shipping from aliexpress could be up to month to Czech. Also prusa support is sending me some new thermistor that should solve the issue according to them. I guess we well see.

How long did it take until they said that they are going to send a new one? Waiting a week now for a reply:/
