Suggestion: "Silent Mode" Tweaks
Hello...
I would like to offer a couple of suggestions for "silent mode" printing, in the hope that these might be something that could be built in to a future firmware update. Both are very closely related...
1. "Short Distance Prints"
In some scenarios, it is inevitable that Prusaslicer is going to slice up an object that includes areas where there are lots of very short movements of the print head. For example, I have an object [printing now] in which I have a uninform "wall" [flat surface] of an object that is 2mm thick and set at an angle of 45 degrees to the horizontal. The print head is doing an amazing job of printing it, all things considered, but as the print head moves across the object during an "infill" pass [this piece has 100% infill as it's a necessarily thin part that needs to be strong] the result is a print head that moves back-and-forth very rapidly, making vibration and noise.
My suggestion would be: is it possible, either in Prusaslicer or the i3 firmware, to have a setting which says, "When printing in silent mode... if the "print distance" is [for example] less than 25mm, reduce print speed even more [say to 33% of requested print speed] to help reduce noise and vibration further. In a *perfect* world, the print head would slow down, incrementally, just before it reaches the end of the print line [so as to not have a "sudden stop" shock... but I accept that this is likely beyond current capabilities of the technology...
2. Reduced Traversal Speed
The second observation comes from the fact that in every print there is a repeating movement where the print head needs to "reset" itself as a new layer starts. The head will move [often diagonally] to a different corner of the print object as it begins to print a new layer. This "traversal speed" does not seem to be reduced by the same amount [if at all] from the "Tune>>Print Speed" option... Would it be possible to either adjust the coding of the drivers so that the traversal movement was reduced by the same amount please?
Hopefully both of these could be added in software/firmware quite easily, with little need for new hardware...
Thanks for your consideration!
RE: Suggestion: "Silent Mode" Tweaks
Prusa staff do not read these forums. I suggest you post your ideas over on the GitHub Issues...
RE: Suggestion: "Silent Mode" Tweaks
That 'traversal' is probably a non-print move and there's a setting for non-print moves and I can verify that setting it down to 100-120 from the default of 180 does quiet the 'whoosh' sound as it moves quite a bit.
RE: Suggestion: "Silent Mode" Tweaks
Hello 3Delight...
I wasn't aware of this, so I've followed your kind advice and created an issue on github.
I appreciate you taking the time to set me right.
Thank you

@jsw
Thanks jsw... Please forgive my having to ask [as I did not spot this option before when I looked]. Is this in the printer firmware, in a menu option, or is this in Prusaslicer?
Thanks for posting a reply - it sounds like you might have just what I need...
RE: Suggestion: "Silent Mode" Tweaks
It's in PrusaSlicer under the 'speed' category.
RE: Suggestion: "Silent Mode" Tweaks
Thanks jsw...
For anyone finding this thread and wanting directions to the settings... the "Speed" option can be found by switching PrusaSlicer to "Expert" mode, then right-click on the object in the (Simple/Advanced/Expert) panel. Take the last option, "Add Settings", and in the pop-up menu that follows, the last-but-one option is "speed".
If you select [tick the box] on all the following options, you get the ability to customize the speed values for (listed with default speeds):-
Bridges - 30 mm/s
External perimeters - 25 mm/s
Gap fill - 40 mm/s
Infill - 80 mm/s
Perimeters - 45 mm/s
Small Perimeters - 25 mm/s
Solid infill - 80 mm/s
Top solid infill - 40 mm/s
I'm going to guess that maybe either "External perimeters" or "Bridges" might be worth some experimentation...
