The importance of a good printer support base

I posted a tongue-in-cheek topic based on my attempt to stop noise and ringing on my prints here.

I had some comments, notably from @tim-weston and @friedhelm-b but I've seen other posts on the topic. I decided to give the @tim-weston method a try because it was generally easier to just buy the foam and slab. I ordered the recon/chip foam pre-cut for the size of the cabinet and bought the slabs at a DIY store. I bought 4 foam pads (520x560x40) for around £30 including delivery and 4 slabs (350x350x32) for around £16.

Here's the installation of 2 in some IKEA Platsa cabinets.

Installation

I'm still waiting to print some extra grommets and cable tidies before putting the doors back on.

Well, the difference in both the noise and print artefacts is astounding. The ringing in the dog tags I've been printing is gone entirely. Science and anecdotes obviously fell on sceptical ears but I can't believe the difference it has made. There is no noise in the vicinity now, let alone being heard around the house, even with the doors off. It's almost like the sound is literally being sucked out. The motions seem smoother, especially on camera. I imagine the vibrations were shaking the camera ever so slightly. For anyone having issues with noise, and ringing, I would absolutely recommend trying this out for relatively little cost.

It should also be noted that previously the cabinets were on a slight incline, being in a garage with a sloping floor. I printed some spacers for the feet because it was hard to adjust the height with the locking nut on the Lätthet adjustable feet. The cabinets are now absolutely level. I do wonder whether the slight incline (about 1 in 40 but varying) had some effect on the often hideously grating noises coming from the X-axis and Y-axis bearings when doing diagonal motions. These have disappeared too.

I think I'm just trying to say to those that are in a desperate state, as I was, that this is definitely something to try. Also, huge kudos to everyone trying different things and responding to posts like mine. I really was miserable about the whole thing and even cancelled an order for another 2 printers.
