Prusament galaxy black in toys

Hello dear community members,

What is your opinion about prusament galaxy black use for toys?

For my own projects I try to print only natural PHA so I am not overly concerned about extra additives but I have some colored PLA that I recently bought for christmas decorations. I wanted to print some tokens for my kids ( https://www.printables.com/model/162614-super-mario-star-token ) because I had some yellow colorafabb pla around. While I was getting ready to print I remembered I received some sample prusament galaxy pla with my core one kit so I thought it would be a great time to try a manual multi color print (never done that before).

After the print was done I realised the galaxy black pla has other additives in it, I read online that the glitter in prusament galaxy black pla is made out of aluminium. Some questions I have now:
- Is that correct? Is it aluminium?

- I was going to give this tokens to my very young children to play around with. They put all the toys in their mouth. I guess that means these things should not be given to them while they still chew on the toys. Is it safe after or should I just never give these things to my kids? I understand these are community contributions so I will not take the answers as scientific fact, just curious what other people's view on this is.

- How contaminated is my nozzle now with these additives? If I print a few layers of PHA/PLA natural full print surface, will I mostly get rid of them?

Thank you very much

A somewhat related thought: FDM-printed parts aren't particularly hygienic because of surface quality (layers, small cracks). I wouldn't let kids chew on them, for that reason alone, regardless of the material. It can't just be wiped clean.

I won't get into the "is aluminium dangerous to your health" discussion. If you are concerned about it, you better avoid it. But to my knowledge it has not been documented anywhere what the glitter particles in Prusament Galaxy are made of. Mikola (from Prusa) has commented the original blog post which announced the release, stating that "it’s just glitter, not actual metal particles".

In any case I would not be worried about trace amounts of whichever additives contaminating the nozzle and the next filament. These will be negligible. Unless you are using filament laced with cyanide maybe...

I have always assumed the glitter is mica - but I agree, FDM printed toys that might be sucked are certain to be a reservoir for bacteria and fungi. At the very least coat the whole with food-safe lacquer.

Cheerio,

Thank you mnentwig, Jurgen and Diem for your thoughts, I appreciate it.

It's funny I should worry about aluminium now after a lifetime of using said recipients to drink from but I got extra paranoid because of the ages involved. In any case, I wrote to prusa support to ask what the flitter is, curious to find out.

Indeed, since I have decided to be paranoid, I will be the toddler who enjoys these toys and will print again in another filament . Not sure which one yet, maybe something "natural".

Thank you again

Hi again,

I received a response from Prusa support, it did not answer my question directly (what is the glitter) but, just like here, tried to convince me not to chew on my prints.

So that's the end of that adventure.

Thank you again for the help.
