Potential new order

Hi,
I am considering ordering a i3 mk3 (kit) and the mmu2 option.
Questions/points :
1..if I chose the smooth bed, looks like delivery time will be within the week as they are in stock (I am in the UK).
2..if I chose the powered bed, then 3 week lead time
3..what is the purpose of the different bed types - when would I use smooth, when would I use powered?
4..the powered bed does not seem to be available as a separate spare. So if I order the kit with smooth bed, I may look at ordering the powered later, but what is the price?
5..the mk3 kit with smooth bed would arrive quickly, but the mmu2 option to follow in January due to back orders?

Thanks
Texy

Re: Potential new order

The textured bed is reported to give a better first layer adhesion without the need for release agent such as glue stick/windex/hair spray used for PET/TPU/Flex.
The smooth sheet is tried and tested since early MK2, and there is a host of useful information in the Prusa Knowledgebase, these forums and the various user groups on the internet.
The textured plate will be available as a separate purchase to registered Prusa customers once all current order backlogs have been cleared.
To get the MK3 with smooth bed almost immediately and the MMU2 later, each would need to be in a separate order. If you order together, they will ship together. Order one, then the other separately, and you will have some time to become familiar with assembly and operation of the basic MK3 before adding the complexity of the MMU V2.

Re: Potential new order

I have been using the smooth PEI
flex plate since last december and it has been working beautifully so far.
Durability may be less than the powder coated flex plate, but honestly I think it's less about one OR the other but one AND the other.
Sometimes you'll want a smooth first layer, sometimes a rough one.

So I'd personally order the kit with powder coated plate and additionally a smooth PEI sheeted plate.

If you only want one, pick your poison but keep in mind that the powder coated plate is currently only available to buyers of a new printer, so I'd go for that and you'd always have the option to get the smooth one later

OK, thanks for the replies so far guy's. So with the smooth bed, is any additional 'sticking' material usually required, ie gluestick, hairspray, blue tape, etc?
At the moment I use a creality CR-10 on glass plate with gluestick, which works well for the print process, but does leave glue on subject of course.....

Re: Potential new order

Hi Ian,

I guess it depends upon how impatient you are...

I ordered my 3rd Prusa printer Mk3 as soon as it was announced last year. I ordered mu Mk2.5 upgrade for my second Prusa shortly afterwards and I ordered my MMU upgrade as soon as the MMUv1 upgrade was

I still haven't got any powder coated buildplates, I still don'thave my MMU upgrade, whilst I have been waiting, Prusa decided not to continue with the MMUv1 line, so my MMUv1 upgrade, will be an MMUv2
I did buy an additional stickered build plate. and that is on my Prusa Mk2 MMUv1 at the moment...

we are advised that the sticker buildplate is not as robust as the powder coated one... I am still on the first side of my buildplates. Ok, the first one is beginning to show wear... but it's best part of a year old

I would suggest get the stickered plate on your mk3 and get it delivered ASAP... then you can start learning about it, order your MMU so it arrives as and when available, and wait t o order a powder coat sheet when it's available...

YMMV...

Re: Potential new order

I use a clean build plate with PLA, and for PETG / TPU I use talcum powder rubbed in and wiped off, or finger grease / forehead grease wiped on the build plate... I don't use glue stick or windex, or hairspray or other proprietary coatings.

for cleaning I use IPA 99%, or Acetone, or Dish soap and water...

Re: Potential new order

Hello Ian,
You may want to go with the option that gets you your printer faster. I ordered my MK3 Nov 2017 and didn't get it until Apr 2018 so I had time to read up on all the other issues people had on their first printer. With all of the stories of marking up the bed I was going to be determined not to scratch mine. And scratched mine I did.
Where I had problems was getting the Z height dialed in. I was using the wrong direction based on the PINDA probe height and the direction to go on the Z adjustment so I hit the bed a few times and with two thin of filament or nozzle being too low I ran some lines into the bed.
If you are lucky you wont have any bed issues. And if you do make sure you have funds for a spare bed of one kind or another.

OK, so just to confirm, this is the bed plate that will come with the mk3, if I chose smooth bed option?
https://shop.prusa3d.com/en/3d-printer-parts/228-replacement-pei-sheet-ultem.html
I know the powered bed sheet isn't available separately, but what is the likely cost to be when it is?
Also do you know if payment is taken straight away (for the MMU2.0), even though the item will not deliver until next year?
thanks,
Ian

No, actually, that's just the replacement sticker that goes on the plate, which brings up another issue.
AFAIK (subject to correction) the smooth plate can be resurfaced by removing the old (worn/damaged) sticker(s) and installing a new one (not simple, but doable) on one or both sides. AFAIK, the powdered plate surface cannot be replaced--the whole plate needs to be replaced.

I ordered my MK3 kit w/ smooth plate and MMU2 (separate orders) in June, and received the kit within 3 days.
I am still waiting for the MMU2.

That's "MISTER Old Fart" to you!

So at this moment in time, you cannot order any spare plate for the mk3, you only get the option you chose when you ordered the kit/printer?

Access to the parts section is restricted to paying customers and it opened up when I placed my order... might have been when my CC went through but that evening for sure. https://shop.prusa3d.com/en/34-mk3-printer-parts

Re: Potential new order

My advise: Go with smooth bed first. You will have it fast and you can learn how the machine works. MMU2 and powder coated sheet will be still an option which you can go for, if required.

Hi Ian,

when you order a prusa, you get access to the spares for it.
sticker build plates are in stock

from memory, in the brief period that powder coat sheets were on the spares page, they were cheaper than the sticker build plate
Prusa usually take payment for pre orders immediately...

regards Joan

if you want a spare sticker sheer build plate, order your printer, then take the order number, have a word on chat, tell them you want to order the buildplate as well, and that you would like to add it to your order to save postage, and they will probably give you access to the spares and a code to save additional postage!

Hi Joan,

It's an orange stock, not green. Last time I ordered this "orange in stock" took 4 weeks to be shipped.

I like that idea, but for the initial order, I would want plates of both types, so I would be back to waiting 3 weeks, due to the PC option.
Actually I am leaning towards the PC option more than the PEI anyway....
Thanks

Even with 3 weeks delay. You will probably have your powder coated build plate before me 🙁

Re: Potential new order

if you are getting your kit for a USA delivery keep your total under $799.99 inc shipping or you stand a good chance of getting a customs charge of $35 to$55 to $?? depending on the total and what the mood of the guy doing the assessing at US customs... if you do get hit with a charge the shipper will slap on an extra fee processing charge and these will be COD when you get it... The special deal with DHL only works if you just get the kit as then it will be under $800

Thanks but I am in the UK and part of the EU (for now!) so no import charges for me.
