RE: Poll: How do you offset your Z Axis?

You forgot a viable option: The build plate itself. I frequently use a textured plate that I coated one side with a replacement PEI sheet. My theory was that I could flip the sheet to one side or the other, depending on whether I wanted the first layer of the build to be smooth or textured, and I wouldn't have to adjust the Z offset since the total thickness of the plate was exactly the same no matter which side was up (or down). Surprisingly, I found that when the textured side is up, the offset needs to be closer to the plate (by about 0.1mm) than when the smooth side is up. So I  still need to change the offset even though the build plate thickness hasn't changed. With that caveat, I find that the offset is relatively independent of the type of filament loaded or other factors.

Well I took that for granted given the fact that it's the very first reason to adjust the Z Axis
