Photogammetry

Started a new project for creating mesh (obj) models. It involves (3) GoPro Hero 5's mounted on a revolving boom at 10 degree increments. One camera is at equator 0deg, one at -45 Lat and one at 45 Lat. I could have done it with one camera but that would have involved 3 times the time. Right now it's designed to take 36 photos at each lat. I'm using Meshroom to assemble the photos. Pipe is 1/2" emt conduit. I've started the build but will not post photos of it until all the mounts are in place. Here is a pic of the model.

Didn't realize there was that much interest in Photogammetry (500 hits in a day). I'll make sure I post some models as they are created.

The other Gopro's are in shipment. Should be some photos soon.

Top and Bottom views of target drum which mounts onto a photography light pole tripod. The object to be converted to a model will be mounted above this drum. Once the targets are applied to the drum (54 of them) they are included in the pics and the software will use these targets as markers for photo alignment. As you cans see it's quite a long print.

Fascinating topic. Interested to see where you go with this project.

Cheers

From everything I've been reading this should work. I don;t need another sigh in my life. All 3 cameras will be operated by 1 smart remote simultaneously. That way I don't have to reposition the one camera at 3 different latitudes. What I have learned on youtube is that target's in the photos that will be used as marker points are critical for phot alignment . Hence, the target drum besides one's placed misc around the shop. Can't wait for the remote and additional; cameras to get here. There was no way I could afford one of those $10,000 hand held scanners, which are incredible, and a powerful laptop to go along with it.

Couldn't wait to post some progress photos. Everything that looks plastic is printed on the Prusa. Locking knobs have a 1/4-20 threaded bolt.

Got the other (2) GoPro's. Still need the Smart Remote to fire all 3 at once. The marker/target drum is done. The targets on there help the software assemble and align the photos for the model (obj/mesh) creation. Bought some background material today but have to make the stand that will hold them (one white/one black). This will make masking the photos a whole lot easier.  No pics of that yet. You can either revolve the cameras around a model or if it's small enough just rotate the drum and snap the pictures.

RE: Photogammetry

I take it that the end goal of this project is to be able to scan real-world 3d objects and get them into a machine-readable form so that they can be edited and printed, correct?

Also I get the impression that you are trying to reduce or eliminate the tedious manual matching of points between the individual photos, correct?

Correct. With a known distance between targets/markers it will create the printable model to scale. You can always use slicer to scale it to whatever size you want. Just like you were trying to do with that O scale car. It will be great for objects that you can't use a caliper on. I will definitely post some results when I get this thing fired up. Still waiting on the Smart remote to get here so I can fire all 3 cameras at once.

Here's a general idea of what the software does.

RE: Photogammetry

Why do all three cameras need to be fired at the same time?  I can see the need for a remote shutter trip to prevent shaking the camera but if object position and lighting don't change you could fire each camera individually, move support frame to next position, fire each camera, move, etc.

RE: Photogammetry

You are correct. You could do the 1st rotation then move the camera to the next latitude and take the 2nd and 3rd sets with one remote. But having the 3 cameras cuts your photo time by 2/3. An old ipod will control the 3 cameras individually but you have to connect to the next camera and the next. This takes time. There is a conflict of wifi connecting when all 3 cameras are on at the same time. The Smart remote solves this problem.

RE:

If you watch any of the videos on Youtube about photogammetry and Metashape you will see it can be done with one camera. The program stitches the photo's together by aligning multiple common points in the photos. The more stable the cameras the less time assembling the photos and creating the obj. With this rig (if I'm rotating the object instead of the boom) I can take 108 photos based on a 10 degree rotation in about a min or so. Taking the pictures with one camera will take about 5 mins accounting for moving the camera and aligning the arm. Now if you're taking 360 photos per revolution with one camera your time increases to aprox. 50 mins or so. 3 cameras would drop that to about 10 mins or so and a lot of program time.
