noob question on clear prusament petg translucency
hey. i've only done a few PLA prints so apologies in advance if this question is dumb.
how translucent is the clear prusament petg filament? i was thinking of printing some kitchen-related things e.g. objects to measure liquids, this sort of thing. i am aware of the simple fact that "more perimeters = less light" but i wonder if this is viable at all?

Pretty much, your not going to get glass even with massive post processing, but if your willing to work hard at it you can get decent translucency. I personally have found that I get the best clear (most clear) from ABS.

I've never used the Prusa so-called clear PETg, but I've used the RepRappers and Overture.
Below is a model RR building with the windows done in so-called clear PETg, and some clip-on diffusers done in the same filament.
For the building windows, I really do not want pure transparency, as that would just show the internal construction and the lamp bracket and wiring.
There are some threads here discussing and showing some examples of near-transparent printing. IIRC, ABS seems to work the best, but requires smoothing with something like acetone, or else tedious manual smoothing and polishing.

Most of my prints in clear PETG look just like @JSW posted. I've used Prusament, Overture, Hatchbox, and Polymaker clear PETG and they all seem to perform about the same.
Without any tweaking, they're translucent when printed, but not clear. Although as @swiss_cheese linked there are methods of getting things to be fairly clear.

thanks everyone for the replies!
so due to a combination of both printing directions and thickness does my use case - handling liquids and being more or less able to see them - even make sense? most of the things i've been seen are things meant to have lights e.g. windows or lamp shades or generic decorative objects.
i'm basically just mindful of getting 1kg of filament for potentially not much use 🙂

For what it's worth, I actually like printing in Clear for pretty much everything. So I buy it just as a default.
However, I think with some testing on the approach to get a clear print, you can likely get something reasonable. I kept trying to find an image of some test-tubes that I saw that was reportedly made with polymaker. It was shockingly clear for a 3D print, thus my inspiration for buying that brand.
