RE: MK4 Wishlist

As I heard it here, MK4 isn't even on the drawing board yet.  They're fine tuning XL and they might release it Q4 2020.  Once they're humming on XL they'll port those upgrades to the MK4 design.  So I wouldn't expect MK4 before Q4 2021, which is 18 months out.

- A real auto leveling system that detect the needed z Offset automatically
- A dedicated Enclosure not that (yes cheap) IKEA trick.

I Love My MK3s but I need to confess that since We have a FlashForge Creator 3 I nearly never use Mu Prusa MK3s
I'm a bit bored to adjust the z-offset for every time the filament change or the for no reason at all ... and the enclosure allow printing PC correctly, this is nearly impossible with MK3s
else I have to say the PEI bed and the quality (when correctly adjusted) is missing me

RE: MK4 Wishlist

Hi I would like to see better thermistors for the bed and hot end, one of my pals has got through 4 bed thermistors in a year.

i have used 2 on the hot end.

would we be able to do it as a upgrade?

Or is it totally new from the ground up??

i cant see it myself, what would be nice is go bigger.. go CR10S size now that would be nice

for me i have used many touch screens, but not really a fan of them. still like the knob has a good feel to it

Comparing 3.5k printer with 1k does not make sense 😀

For more money you get more music, I understand that. I believe Prusa is going more fore price/value.

Agreed - the e3d thermistor is fragile for a printer like the MK3s that needs a lot of work to change nozzles etc. Would like to see a hardier thermistor. I think I've gone through 2 or 3 in 2 years. Personally would like to see an extruder design that didn't require so much dismantling to replace fans or other parts - just a dedicated routing channel for the wiring would help - what is there right now is finickey. The other part I've had to replace at least twice is the print fan - as the wiring on the board easily breaks.

Only other thing that would be a nice is an easier to clean setup - cleaning the gears is again, a lot of dismantling and reassembly.

@laura-f2

yes i think my fan is on the way out, just got a spare last week.

you are right about the wires around the fan, i am not that happy with that.

very close to the belt

could we go with wheels like the CR10S that is a thought, change from the bearings

I have to agree.  That is like comparing a Toyota to a Mercedes.  Different cars and different focus group.

An upgrade path to better rods and bearings would be nice. I can print almost silently in slow motion but anything big or fast (including retractions) and the noise is horrible.

yes, a totally silent printer would be on top off my list.

I don't have that issue.  I keep my printer well lubricated.

I think you are an exception more that the rule. The fact that to do lubrication properly requires significant disassembly to access the bearings for all 3 axis tends to deter people from doing it properly. I would certainly +1 the idea of a more maintenance friendly/free solution in this case, even if it did add a bit to the price tag.

- Option to move power switch to the front

- SD card/USB stick connector on the front

- USB drive mode (printer when connected to PC shows as removable drive)

- Built in TCP/IP networking

- More clearance on extruder to allow planar printing

- No touch screen.

Actually, I would like to some of this on MK3S.

Small touchscreen too clumsy? Then use something like a 7 inch capacitive touchscreen...

OK, here's my list, in no particular order:

1) Dual extruder. MMU is just too clumsy, wasteful of filament, finicky, BUT, engineer a mechanical mounting that will allow easy, precise Z-homing/syncing of the nozzles.

2) Build volume of at least 400x400x400. Aligns nicely with the "4" part of the badge.

3) Simpler F/W upgrades; think power-on from a USB stick (like the Mini) or SD card if you really have to.

4) Two extruders.

5)  On-board camera at bed level with close-up view of nozzle(s).

6) Built-in LED illumination of nozzle(s). (Goes hand-in-hand with the camera.)

7) More than one extruder (maybe two?)

8) This is a long shot: Conveyor belt bed as an add-on/option. (For unattended production.)

9) One-button repeat/reprint (as available on the Mini.) (Firmware solution.)

10) Semi-automatic stacking of parts whose design allows it. ((Prusa Slicer feature.)

11. Did I mention dual extruders?

I have cash waiting.....

On the noise topic.  A trick way of adjusting the belt tension(s) and some kind of gauge or feedback that tells you when you're at the proper tension would be extremely awesome.  That would likely go a long way toward silencing my printer.

@smoking_rubber

I dont think it will be possible, its the fans that make most of the noise, my Cr10S runs so quiet, but the fans are just spinning so fast.

i have put Noctua in that did not help much

get the fans gone and make a more the board run cooler , would be win for everybody

I agree, something that I would also not mind is to already add as part of the enclosure a dry box for the filament, so by default filament can stay dry even while standing on the printer, ready to print.

More I would not mind that either.  Maybe a different way to look at this would be to give optional upgrades for higher end parts for those who prefer while still having the standard, cheaper options to keep the entry price low.

I would also like to see the option of being able to directly connect the printer via Ethernet/Wifi built in as standard which would naturally also then support the idea of built in camera and lighting.

About the size increase, yes I like that idea too, though I imagine that would then work better for a complete redesign in the form of the XL (which is already sounding interesting).

I have to agree about the topic dual extruders.  Even if you take an approach like MMU2 I still do not think it eliminates the benefits of dual extruders.  For example I am sure an many cases if you have dual extruders and you have a proper optimisation of which filament gets changed when, you will see a grate improvement on the waste topic and even overall print time.  This becomes so much more relevant when you consider something like printing multiple colours in the same layer or a primary filament with something like soluable supports in the same layer.  With a single filament it means having to do a filament change with the accompanied waste for every single layer of the print where the two filaments are used together.  Sure, printing multi colour might not be only two colours but even then, having two extruders and optimising the filament changes will clearly improve the situation significantly.

I am also for a properly engineered multi extruder concept to bring an optimised solution rather than bulky and troublesome for sure, but in terms of concept I guess the way I see it, a combination of MMU1 and MMU2 is more sensible.
