Is printing via Octoprint slower than SD card? Yes, but ... it depends.
Hi guys
I often heard that printing via USB is slower than straight from SD card. But no one ever goes into the details when this happens or how much OctoPrint is slower. So I test printed an object with different infill settings.

I was surprised by the 15% gyroid @ 80mm/s. I really though USB can take that.
But it might get better when Prusa merges this pull request after the 2.2 release for Prusa Slicer. Lets hope they have the resources for it.
Anyhow, if you print with OctoPrint and the actual print time is close to the Prusa Slicer estimate, then you probly have nothing to worry about.

I just testet merills slic3r which has gyroid improvemts. https://github.com/supermerill/Slic3r/releases
With this, printing 30% gyroid via USB/Octoprint is as fast as from SD card!
Sadly Prusa does not have the ressources to merge the patch into Prusa Slicer. But merills slic3r has merged Prusa Slicer 2.1 into his release. You can just download his zip file and test it.

USB is not the bottleneck. The microcontroller in the printer has no USB support at all, but is connected to an on-board USB to serial converter. The serial link only runs at 115200 baud.
