Extending the time allowed to edit postings?

I'd like to see the window of time allowed for editing a post to beyond what it is now (just a few minutes).

Invariably I discover TOO LATE that I phrased something incorrectly or left out an important detail.  Given that many of these posts are very detailed and technical in nature having an hour or even 24 hours of editing time would preferred.

The problem is that there are a lot of spam bots that post something innocuous then come back later and edit it to be spam, but because it is an "old" post it is less likely to be spotted. I used to help run a scuba forum and it was a massive problem there, the only recourse was a relatively short editable time.

I see.  But would spambots post consistently enough to earn member ranking stars?    Seems that longer editing times could be an earned privilege.

I would be surprised if the software would allow that.

They already do.  The moderators here regularly delete AI posters, sometimes they are not spotted until several posts have accumulated - one slightly odd but apparently on topic post may not be enough to flag up an abuser but all the first five posts usually clinches it - sometimes only a few hours apart, sometimes weeks, the timing is presumably programmable.

Cheerio,

Dang, it's a constant cat & mouse (or spy vs. spy) contest.

It is, and a right pain.

The trouble is that the forum software devs have to go through full test cycle to make sure they haven't broken anything which takes time but the bot devs can release as soon as they want and if it is broken no big deal. That means the forum software is always behind the curve in the battle.

How do you think an hour or 24-hour editing period would impact the overall dynamics and interactions within the community?

You could write the text in a word processor and once you have it perfected. Copy and paste to the forum.

The short editing window is used to prevent spammers editing posts after they have been approved by moderators.

Cheerio,

You don't even need an AI bot. The most successful instances I've seen are just duplicates of other posts. It's a perfectly genuine post, written in good faith...just written by someone else, maybe even on another forum.

This seems solvable though...run edits through the same anti-spam measures used on posts.

That is only true for pure text postings.
When including images, a pure text editor is of no help.

I understand 5min for pure text message anti spam protection.
But can edit time be increased to say 10min for postings containing images?

I often compile messages that take more than ten minutes for in the forum.

The time out starts after the post. Is posted

RE: Extending the time allowed to edit postings?

I'm all for extending the edit timeframe! Right now, the window feels a bit "cut short." We've all been there – spotting that glaring typo or missing detail just as the edit timer hits zero. Considering the often technical nature of our posts, having an hour (or even a full day!) to "polish" our prose would be a major win. Let's avoid those "cutting" room floor moments and give ourselves time to type-o-correct! 😆
