Community project section?

So to see if this might be helpful for the community,
I noticed several projects that are posted on here and other members jump in and get involved.

Would a dedicated section for just community projects / builds / mods be helpful?

Best Answer by Same Old Shane:

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions,

For the older sections of the forums and moving them, that is already in the works. There are limitations within the current forum system, but I would like to try and clean things up so its not an long scroll to find what you want.

For the project section. I know there are sections under the different hardware / software sections. My random thought was to have them in its own section, but I won't move anything around.

RE: Community project section?

There already is a "User Mods" section for each of the printer models. Most of the community projects will be printer-specific, so I am afraid adding yet another section would not make it easier to find relevant content.

As a general guideline, may I suggest "Don't open yet another new section without closing at least three other, obsolete ones"? I think the forum structure is too complex and fragmented at the moment.

I can only agree with that.

Most of the projects I'm currently working on are printer agnostic. Generally they will work with any Marlin printer so don't really know where to stick them accept here. I was planning to post it in "Other Software" (I think that's what it's called) but it'll just get lost. I certainly don't look around there (much).

RE: Community project section?

I tend to agree with the comments above - most such projects are printer specific so have a suitable location already - but I can foresee other efforts; the biggest we have had so far was the Prusa led PPE masks project during the COVID19 crisis.

As such the idea seems sound 'though I expect it to be lightly used -  but we do, first, need to prune some of the many sub-branches of the forum to make room.

Maybe have a general User Mods and Software with a General subsection and subsections for specific printers?

RE:

Whatever you do, please simplify and clean up the structure first. The current English forum has 32 (!) top-level sections which all show up in a flat list on the forum's start page. And most of them show a list of next-level subsections (typically 5 per section) too. I wonder when was the last time any user has scrolled through that full list...

Maybe start by moving everything MK2.x into the "Older Printers" section, which currently has the Mk1 only. Drop all the subsection headings from the start page to shorten that massive list. And instead introduce a few new top-level headings under which several of the existing sections can be grouped -- e.g. "CoreXY Printers", "i3 Printers", "Accessories", "Software and Online Services", "Printing and Projects (printer agnostic)" or such.

RE: Community project section?

What would be the purpose of a community project forum section? To let people find each other who are willing to help doing projects...? Or to have people actually discuss projects they're working on together? If it's the latter, then I don't think a forum would be a good platform. Then a Discord server or similar might be a more suitable platform.

RE:

It really depends on the project - some will be fine with the forums, other prefer  faster iteration on Discord, another ones prefer slow github issues.

We have enough sections already, or there are too many ( for example Mini InputShaper is dead) or not enough in some cases ( gpio specific looks too flat).

Notice that often forums are only an invite to the different locations on the internet which are used to host the actual project, most people know the forums ( or Discord) are too limited or not suitable for the projects in generalz but are great as showoff.

Maybe revisit after the tidy-up; see how things look then.

At SMRRF this weekend there were some printer non-specific collaborations of a type that *might* have found a place in such a forum.
