Best practice to share setup for filament?

Hello,

what is the best practice to share prusa-slicer settings for a new filament?

When I started to print MOLDLAY, I wished that there would be a finished filament/print setup. I found none, and now I have created it myself. I'd like to share that with whoever might need it.

Similar to a review on github, it would be great if others could share their improvements. I don't claim at all that my settings are perfect 😉

Thanks for your input!

RE: Best practice to share setup for filament?

You can export any profile settings, either the 3 currently selected or all of your custom ones by doing a export config bundle (bundle does them all).  These can then be imported in by anyone.  Its the normal way of doing a backup of all your customised settings.

The issue is where to actually save them such that they are accessible for people to download and findable.  I know people have added profiles for other things/cura settings etc as 'models' on thingiverse.  Might be worth seeing if there is anywhere set up for that already.

Hi Markus,

please, do you still have the settings for this filament? I bought it, and before starting printing, I would like to try it with your profile to minimalize trash.

Thank you,

Dina

RE:

In the resin printing world (SLA) there are databases of resin settings for various printers that also have yelp style user ratings and are ranked by rating. Why not in the 3D (FDM) printer world? Too many variables. The independent variables in the resin world? The printer type, resin type, resin color. What’s the dependent variables? Exposure time. That’s it… So If you have an Elegoo Mars 5 Ultra and use Siraya Tech Blu then pretty much person’s A settings are exactly the same as person B.

In the FDM world (3D printing with plastic), you have: type of plastic, manufacturer of plastic, dryness of plastic, age of plastic, color of plastic (for engineering materials), type of printer, type of nozzle, material of nozzle, type of print bed, material of print bed, ambient room temperature (for some types of plastic). All of these affect which type of nozzle to use, what type of bed to use, what nozzle temperature, bed temperature, flow rate, extrusion multiplier,  shrinkage compensation, chamber temperature, whether or not an adhesive is needed.

I’m sure I’ve left a lot of stuff out but the general idea is the best setting for you depends on too many variables. That said, if you are printing a fidget toy or a gridfinity box then any generic setting for your choice of filament is probably more than good enough.

If I’m doing a functional print where everything has to be accurate to a fraction of a millimeter. I will often spend and entire day calibrating the filament by running temperature, flow, extrusion and (other) tests. And then I repeat them for different nozzle types and diameters.
