3D Printing a 2 Sided Coin - your experience

I've been trying to read up on how others have 3D printed 2 sided coins with their Prusa Slicer/Printer.

It seems from reddit posts most have printed front and back as 2 separate stls and then glued the 2 pieces together.

We're interested in printing many as free giveaways and gluing them together could be time consuming on a work project that has a deadline of 2 days ago. Plus, we worry re: glue and the public not always being the best bet.

Has anyone printed a 2 sided coin by standing the coin up vertical on the bed to print on both sides?

Appreciate you sharing your experiences and what you've learned from them.

Thank you!

RE:

Build a break away / self-sacrificing stand that will hold the coin vertial as it prints. Like frame with thin tabs holding the coin, that snap off. Like a plastic model kit on frames.

The coin does not have to be round, many are not. This can help with overhangs near the bottom edge.

That sounds like a good suggestion.

I'm still a noobie re: things like this.

Have you seen any good YT videos which show the details of building something like that?

Thank you so much.

Do they have a subsequent use?  If not you are printing for 99% to wind up in landfill and the rest to linger, forgotten, in the back of someone's desk drawer.

Why not print something that has a practical purpose and which also displays your message? - for eg., a bag-clip with text or logo on the side may in some cases be used for years and be re-read many times over.

Cheerio,

I've printed 2 different 2-sided coins. One was on my personal MK4 w/MMU3 and the other was on the XL 5Tool printer at work, that I operated. I printed the "heads" side of the coin face down on the textured sheet and the "tails" side up. As expected the heads side had the textured feel to it and the tails side had a little roughness to it from the color changes. To minimize the roughness I just put to coins together with their tails sides touching and then just used them to rub each other. This worked to "sand" down the roughness. Everyone that they were great and had received requests to print other stuff, although nothing they wanted was double sided.

- 2nd PRUSA i3 MK2S with MMU v1
- 3rd PRUSA i3 MK2S
- 4th PRUSA i3 MK3 with MMU v2- 5th PRUSA i3 MK4 (upgraded from MK3) with MMU v3 (upgraded from…

The quality of a vertical print will never be great. Here's a thought and you can print these a bunch at a time. Print heads and print tails, but don't glue them. Have one with a pocket and slight circular dovetail ring. Have the other be the match and snap them together when done. It will take a bit of experimenting with the size, but if it's right they shouldn't come apart.
