3D Newbie question regarding first layer

Hi, I am a total newbie in 3D printing.

I do not own a Prusa printer (yet), but I got an very old delta 3D printer from a friend as a gift when I am able to bring it to run.
I found a driver software to connect to the printer and use now Prusa Slicer for the slicing and Gcode generation.

I do now my first print tests and I hope to get some advice from you: why is the first layer in some parts of the bed perfect and in others not?

As the printing is in progress the layer buildup is of course better, but I would like to know why the filament is not sticking/is not present in the right/upper part of the bed.

Thanks in advance,

Thomas

RE: 3D Newbie question regarding first layer

Hi Thomas,

Welcome to the Forum.

that print bed takes me back to my first printers

the most important issues with print surfaces, are-
1, Absolute Cleanliness     I Wash My build surface with HOT Water, and Dish Soap, rubbing the fluid in, with a clean (NEW) dish Sponge and rinsing well with Hot Plain water, then drying the surface with plain paper towels and not touching the surface with your fingers

2, careful adjustment of the build plate, for the first layer.

Good luck, Joan

1. bed level - adjusting it so that first layer is even in all places (such as no corner is printed more thick than the other)
2. you may have to 'square printer' - that is adjust it so that the axes are perpendicular to each other, but this can be done later and manifests in the print being skewed with each layer

go search for those terms over the internet

See my GitHub and printables.com for some 3d stuff that you may like.

Hi, I played with the leveling and it seams to be the cause. Just a question to you, the experienced ones: in this picture are only to copies where the leveling is still off. When the layer is too thin does it means the extruder is too near to the bed or to far from it? I guess if the nozzle is too near the filament has no chance come out in the needed quantity?
