Z-Axis offset incorrect depending on the print?

I'm trying to print the Herringbone Planetary Gear from here (specifically the user-contributed print for the Mini provided by Pax); whenever I start to print from this gcode, the first layer is so low that I barely get a smear of PLA. I barely know what's going on - if someone knows, will you please clue me in to what to do to fix the problem, as well as maybe the reason I'm encountering this so I can figure it out if I ever see it again?

This is my first printer, and I seemed to be able to complete the setup and "first layer calibration" successfully. I printed the prusa logo bar, as well as 3d Benchy, but neither of these gave me this problem with the first layer.

Do you have two separated sheets such as smooth sheet and textured sheet or something like that?

If you switched the sheet after first layer calibration - you will need to re-run a new calibration for different sheet. Because smooth sheet is thicker than texture sheet.

Thanks for the help - in this case the sheet is the same. My last three troubleshooting steps have been :

  • Rerun first layer offset calibration - printed fine
  • Attempt to print benchy - worked fine
  • Attempted to print gear again - first layer starts out as a smear once again

It's very likely the gcode is bad. Whenever I download any of people's designs - I've ran into some "bad" gcode. I always download non-gcode and I would run it on Slicer to create my own gcode and then print it.
