Printer keeps stopping mid print

Warning, wall of text below, here is the TLDR

Just assembled the printer, benchy seemed to print fine with minor issue on the roof, tried printing the provided nut model and it kept stopping before completing. Tried slicing new and updating firmware and still get same results.

Just assembled the printer last night. Printed a benchy from the thumb drive with the supplied sample orange filament and the benchy printed out mostly OK. There was some stringing on the roof like the printer extruded filament off the sides of the model but the rest of the print looked great. I then moved on to the provided nut model. This got to 27% complete and when I walked by the printer after some time I noticed the Z axis was all the way up, the printer stuck at 27%, elapsed time still counting up and temperatures were holding steady. Trying to pause the print and the screen appeared to lock up. Rebooted the printer and everything came back up OK.

I noticed there was a firmware update available. I was on 4.3.1 so I applied 4.3.2. I tried again a second time and printer did the exact same thing, this time I tried to stop the print and had the same unresponsive issue. I then decided to slice the model myself to see if perhaps there was an issue with the provided Gcode.

After downloading the 3mf file and slicing with Prusa slicer 2.3.3 I printed the file again. This time the printer stopped at 28% and I was there to watch what happened next. The printer moved the Z axis all the way up to the top, then the X axis back a bit, then brought the Z axis all the way down, moved the X axis back too far causing it to crash into the frame, then the other way into the print head. The print head then moved up a bit, made the motion like it was doing another outside layer of the model about 20 mm above the model, then moved the Z axis all the way up and stopped. Just like before the elapsed time was counting up but the printer was doing nothing. I was able to stop the printer this time and it cooled down like it should.

Anyone have any idea what is going on and how I can fix this?

Printer keeps stopping mid print

I am having this exact same issue. I am trying to print a model from thingiverse with a 7 hour print time and it stopped around 4 hours in. I've tried:

  • Re-slicing the model using prusaslicer 2.3.3 (multiple times, different slicing settings)
  • I updated from firmware 4.3.1 to 4.3.2
  • I tried a different piece with a 2h24m print time, also from thingiverse, also re-sliced multiple times
    • Sliced with prusaslicer 2.3.3
    • It stopped around 1 hour
  • Disabling my filament run-out sensor

There's no error message or warning, and as mentioned in the OP attempting to pause the print results in the system becoming unresponsive, even letting it attempt to pause for over an hour.

I even got frustrated and decided to glue parts together and started my remaining ~3hour print of the top half of the first piece, and it froze up with only 3 minutes remaining.

Firmware and USB Flash Drive Formatting

I was able to get through multiple prints successfully after working with Prusa live chat support (thank you Marek M.!). I was told to do the following:

  • Try re-flashing the 4.3.2 firmware - you can do this by holding the button on the machine for ~3s into startup while you turn it on with the firmware USB in the device
  • Try reformatting the USB Flash Drive you are printing from (I think this is what did it for me)
  • Try printing using a computer and USB Cable with software like Pronterface's Printrun (I didn't get to this step because I'm having success after the previous)
  • Try removing the filament sensor completely (mine is still connected, just disabled in settings)

Another thing I've been doing for my own sanity is making sure to use the Export G-code button (the big one) instead of the one that exports directly to USB. I still save to the USB when prompted for the file location, but I was worried about USB-specific issues so I didn't want to use the USB-specific button.

Update

So after moving on to another few models I stopped having this problem but today I have run into it again. I already reformatted the USB drive but will try reapplying the firmware to see if this fixes my issue. I have the model without the filament sensor and it does show disabled in the interface so my issue should not be related to the filament sensor. Once I reflash the firmware and try again I will report back.
